The NCRC welcomes and commends the promulgation of the new ordinance by the Governor of Punjab, declaring child marriage a non-bailable offence and setting 18 years as the minimum legal age of marriage for both males and females, thereby removing previous gender-based distinctions in the law.
The Commission acknowledges the leadership of the Government of Punjab and the collective efforts of all stakeholders, advocates and partners who consistently worked towards strengthening the legal framework to protect children from early and forced marriages.
This significant reform reflects a strong commitment to safeguarding children’s rights, promoting gender equality and ensuring that every child is given the opportunity to grow, learn and thrive free from the harmful impacts of child marriage.
The Commission is hopeful that the ordinance will be duly enacted into an Act by the Provincial Assembly, thereby providing lasting and robust legal protection for children across Punjab.
