like, yeah, it's technically legal for you to reupload someone else's work, but why would you do that when the author whose work you like does not want you to? π the norm for a fandom would be to respect each other's peace

mass-distributed drive with a bunch of fanfic would have been Lovely if it was a "hey authors, if you'd like to share your work whilst AO3 is down let's put it here!" and maybe a nice Inbox where people could chuck a comment for the author to see later. opt-in is just nicer lol.

This is NOT what people on twitter are arguing about and Iβm tired of you all being so disingenuous.
The download button on AO3 is an entirely different button than the UPLOAD button on google.
Yes we gave you permission to download. We did NOT give you permission to upload!

I'm in a weird position as a fic writer where I'm fine with people sharing my fics but also incredibly uncomfortable with the entitlement everyone is admitting to having when it comes to downloading and sharing other people's work in bulk

this is my vent art, i'm calling it "mauling the hand that feeds you"

There are legit ways everyone could have done this. Plenty of authors are OK with it. Ppl could have posted and kept adding as they saw authors say that. But they wanted the clout by posting numbers 3/3

this current fic discourse is so redundant in my eyes. as a writer, we know our work has 100% chance of being archived as soon as it's published. and as a reader, you should respect the author enough to take it down when they ask you to. seems like common sense but apparently not

if ao3 means so much to you and is such a big part of your daily life that you feel the weight of its absence now, let it also be a reminder about the importance of leaving kudos and comments even if its just a simple "i loved this!" to show writers you care about their hard work

Dramione classics that shouldn't be forgotten
A Thread:

i think the fandfic discourse boils down to what someone was saying about consumption being ethics and all that. smth smth you are what you consume bc that's the only way to gain internet points anymore and because readers forget that actually what writers want is community
For writers who don't want their fics reuploaded:
If you donβt want your fics to be on this drive email [email protected] to tell them you donβt want your fics uploaded in their drive. I sent them an email recently and they were very helpful β€οΈ

Here's the thing: when I became active in the dramione fandom in 2019, there were two things happening, Hawthorne and Vine had just vanished in a puff of smoke, and were several popular authors weaponizing their readers to bully and and harass anyone who annoyed them.
I'm pretty neutral about my own fics being shared, but if during this downtime you find one of them through one of the temporary archives currently up, I would love it if you'd let me know. β€οΈ

my take on the ao3 google drive drama: preservation and redistribution are two different things. downloading fic for personal use is fine; uploading other peopleβs work permission to your own archive and distributing the link to thousands of people is a different thing. (1/2)

Tl;dr: community involves all parties, and Iβm really tired of seeing so many readers talk about how fandom is community driven when you guys donβt treat writers as a part of that community. Writers are not upset about credit, theyβre upset about being reduced to content.

As an author: if you don't want your work to be downloaded, don't put it on the site with download option.
To the readers: when all is back make sure to drop a kudos or a comment to the things you read and enjoyed. You don't owe it by law but you do owe it by common courtesy

btw guys writers wanting to receive kudos and comments on that work is not weird or selfish??? why are you guys so weird about engaging with content you enjoy?!?
