these melancholic, evocative pictures and audio spring forth from some dream; stirring in us the longing for some faraway non-existent place, the place of our parents and ancestors, the place of our birth, the place lost in violence; nowhere near, always far.

200 year old Persian map of Mattan.
We can see Bumzu cave, Mattan shrine and Martand temple (on Karewa).
The sheet is from the Dastur-ul-Amal-i-Kashmir, the survey of the Valley made under Colonel Mehan Singh, governor for the Sikh Durbar, around 1838. The work is often mistakenly called Tarikh-i-Kalan-i-Kashmir. National Archives of India copy.

The Shiv-Bhagwati shrine at Akingam, drawn on a 200 year old Persian map.
In the Bring valley near Kokernag, the village of Akingam is known for its temple of Shiva and Bhagwati. The site is also associated with the "Bhand" artists of the area. This hand-drawn map sheet from the Dastur-ul-Amal-i-Kashmir, held at the National Archives of India, shows the shrine as it stood around 1838. The manuscript also gives a brief about the site and its associated story.
What the mapmaker drew
🔸 The label, in Persian: "Thana Shiv-Bhagavati". Thana means a sacred seat or abode, from the Sanskrit sthana.
🔸 The shrine compound at the foot of a hill: a building with an arched doorway, a second structure beside it, and trees all round, chinars and tall poplars.
🔸 An oval enclosure beside the compound, possibly a pool or an open ground.
🔸 Just below, the village circle labelled Mauza' Akingam.
The rest of the sheet sets the scene: the springs of the Bring valley, a hill marked as "the mountain of the iron mine (ahgar)", the place was famous for ironsmiths, probably the oldest of Iron mines in valley, and the villages of Sof, Hangalgund, Bidder, Wailoo and Deolgam. A little upstream, unlabelled, the mapmaker drew a small scene of worship: two seated men beside a Shiva lingam while a boy rings a bell. The facing page shows the great spring of Kokernag.
Why it matters
The Dastur-ul-Amal-i-Kashmir was the survey of the Valley made under Colonel Mehan Singh, governor for the Sikh Durbar, around 1838. The work is often mistakenly called Tarikh-i-Kalan-i-Kashmir. It was compiled to record villages, crops, springs and revenue. Yet its mapmaker drew this shrine with care, and named it in Persian by its Hindu name. The same survey draws the Amarnath cave, Mamleshwar, Verinag and the Harishwar cave above Khonmoh in the same way.

you've the audacity to take a high moral ground! Settler colonialism! Who's lecturing! What happened to the aborigines of Kashmir, the Kashmiri pandits for the past 700 years. Ethnic cleansing. Genocide. Who did that! Who enabled it! Look back. Read books. Read your history.

Portrait of a Kashmir pandit family. 1911. Kashmir. The woman in front row right side is holding a Krishna statue while the man on left holds Radha. Photographer most probably Pandit Vishnunath, the first photographer of Kashmir.

The story of #Kashmir's turmoil did not begin with 1987 'rigged' polls. Records show that #Anantnag's minorities had already faced violence & insecurity years before the mass migration of 1990. Read here with authentic details.

We are a lack and a quest.
We waver between solitude and communion.
And this essay is my attempt to find an answer, a balance between the two extremes.
The essay is now live on Madras Courier website.
Happy reading!

Mumbai, Maharashtra: Kashmiri Pandit Ranjan Jotshi says, "Regarding the rehabilitation of employees, it was stated that they would be provided accommodation from a security perspective. But that is not part of employment; it is the government’s responsibility. Wherever government employees are posted, they are generally provided housing or accommodation. There are around 6,000 PM Package employees here. The government had taken responsibility for constructing houses for them, but even today, although allotments have been made, they have not been given physical possession and are not living there..."

This is scary, the Kashmiri Pandits who are working in the valley are being named with their addresses to target them by a group called United Liberation Council which security agencies believe is another front of LeT. Hope government at the centre takes this seriously and ensures the safety of the Pandits working there

All PM Package Employees Forum Kashmir writes to the Jammu & Kashmir Chief Secretary, requesting enhanced security and protection of PM Package employees in view of fresh threats
A Kashmiri Pandit government employee in Jammu says, "We will neither be scared nor run away this time. Kashmir is ours also. It is our birthplace...A threat letter was issued in the first week of August as well. Today, again, a threat letter has been uploaded that mentions addresses, vehicle numbers, and even phone numbers. I request the Administration and Security agencies to find out the origin of these threat letters and who is providing them with all the information."
Kashmiri Pandit employees recruited under the Prime Minister's employment package continue to face threats from terrorist organisations. The latest threat letter issued yesterday carries their residential addresses and vehicle nos.

Just came across this post from @zairawasimmm. She is upset that Waqf board in Kashmir participated or celebrated or was part of Independence Day celebrations. She cannot understand if Waqf board is mean to serve Islamic interests in Kashmir then why would it be part of celebrations that celebrate India and joy it is to be living and breathing in Independent India. I agree with Zaira. Islam does not recognize nationalism or borders or sacred geography. Islam understands one ummah and therefore it does not make sense for Waqf to be part of celebrations for India. However, I have a question for Zaira: She says Kashmir should look back at its ‘past’. Which past is she referring to? Where does history begin for Zaira? Shah Hamdan? - he was not a Kashmiri, he came from Central Asia. Bulbul Shah? Again not a Kashmiri. Came from somewhere in Central Asia. Shamsuddin Araqi? He also is an outsider who came from Iran? None of them Kashmiri. Should Kashmir then look at Acharya Abhinavgupt? Maharaja Lalitaditya Muktapida? Lalleshwari? Kalhana? Panini? Sharang Dev? Now these are Kashmiris who are part of Kashmir’s glorious intellectual past and for them spirituality was deeply tied to the sacred geography that is Kashmir. They would have no problem celebrating Independence Day. So @zairawasimmm how far in the past are you willing to go? Because unfortunately for you Abhinavgupt and Kalhana’s progeny is still alive to remind you this with every breath you take.
Just came across a clip from a school somewhere in Kashmir. Independence Day celebrations held for or by the Waqf Board.
I have a question. Isn’t waqf board a religious body entrusted with serving the Muslim Community. and ideally doing so while uplholding Islamic Values?
Then there is something almost comical about this institution: an organisation built around a religious and communal purpose, yet sitting so comfortably through something you would expect a religious institution to at least question.
It lends its name to celebrations that reduce our children to stage props and performers.
Why is the default way of involving children — and particularly girls — in public celebrations to make them dance to irrelevant songs? Why aren’t our institutions giving them something to think about, create, learn, discuss, build or contribute?
Especially in a place like Kashmir. Which has had a remarkable legacy of people who understood education as a means to enlighten minds, cultivate character and equip people with knowledge and spirituality.
What about the intellectual and cultural legacy of wonderful scholars of the past.
So if it’s an institution whose very existence is tied to religious purpose, you are taksed with deeper work of strengthening the communities spiritually morally, intellectually.
And to be clear: the point is not the children. Children are often simply made to participate in whatever schools and institutions put before them.
Perhaps that is the real tragedy here.
The question is what an institution chooses to facilitate, endorse and place under its own banner.

A very important, life saving security measure from the administration. Amidst targeted killings and recent threats to Kashmiri pandit employees serving in valley, this temporary measure is a sigh of relief
