“What we do in the next 10 years will determine how AI and Humanity coexist.” - Juan Benet That's why we started Netholabs! @juanbenet and the @protocollabs team have been visionary supporters of ambitious work in neuroAI. Grateful for your support!
Neurotech is Humanity’s Next Frontier! I’ve been investing in neurotech since 2021 and working with teams building BCIs, NeuroAI, and connectomics. It now feels like AI did in ~2019. "Alphafold solved this subset of static structure prediction with a dataset that took 50 years to collect." If we hope AI will help with aging, we should start generating the data it will need now. If we wait until we need them, we’ll be disappointed. It’s not a question of whether we should pause AI development and instead just collect data. We can take a micro fraction of the overall budget and use it to generate the right data in parallel with everything else. The next Impetus Grants @ImpetusGrants round we're setting up is a direct path to that. Our goal is $15M to get these datasets started, and we’ve raised ~$9M so far. norn.group/impetus-grants We already anticipate compute demand and build data centers years before we need them. We should do the same for training and verification data on aging and disease.
I’m seeing a lot of uninformed takes, like this one, about cell simulation feasibility. I wanted to contribute some facts. Alphafold works for predicting a subset of static structures (not how a protein structure changes shape under forces) on 1) well-ordered regions (not intrinsically disordered regions or long flexible loops) and 2) on proteins with plenty of evolutionary relatives (no orphan proteins). Alphafold solved this subset of static structure prediction with a dataset that took 50 years (PDB; 1971 to ~2020) to collect. It did not solve protein dynamics or how proteins fold into their shapes. Those remain unsolved. Cell simulation is vastly more complex and data hungry than any of this. Exact cell simulation means solving quantum equations for every atom and is totally intractable. But all approximations rely on - and are bottlenecked by - data, not compute. So the extrapolation from “alphafold worked” to “therefore cell simulation is feasible” assumes far too much.

Compute Labs was featured in @CNBC this weekend in Kif Leswing and Isabel O'Brien's piece examining how capital markets are adapting to fund the global AI buildout. Demand for compute is clearly not the constraint. The bottleneck is the structural mismatch between how AI clusters operate and how institutional credit underwrites: • The "timing trap" (quote / power / capital): Hardware allocation quotes, colocation power delivery, and credit committee timelines rarely line up naturally • Capital crowds into hyperscale deals, leaving mid-sized neoclouds caught between dilutive equity and credit funds built for large checks • Having a customer contract is different from having a bankable one, where prepayments, SLA step-downs, and deployment timelines can actually clear an investment committee Thank you to the CNBC team for including our perspective on how the financing market is evolving. One day brain implants will be as normal as getting a piercing. @juanbenet has been betting on that since 2021. When we talked, he said the medical use cases are just the start: “These other cases around kind of enhancing the human experience, I think, are even more broadly applicable.” Congrats on launching PLC Neurotech!!!
