Oh, yeah, and this is the episode in which Jesus tells the disciples to eat his body and drink his blood. Communion and betrayal (or, if you prefer, pre-betrayal), all in one episode. petertchattaway.substack.com…
#TheChosen Season 5 episode 6 -- the one in which Judas makes his deal with... well, technically Caiaphas, not the devil. (Although two of the gospels say he was *prompted* by the devil.) Link in the next tweet.
#TheChosen S5E5: Notes on what "moving mountains" means, what "kingdom of heaven" means, the return of a major character, the introduction of a man who will one day kill Jesus' brother, the new "reveal" about the show's timeline, and more. Link in the next tweet.
I visited the Eagle & Child in 1994 and I don't believe it was on a street corner. The pub in this scene might be *named after* Lewis's favorite pub but it is not that pub itself.
In Greta Gerwig’s Narnia, Jadis uses magic to shatter the Eagle & Child. This is the real Oxford pub where Lewis, Tolkien, and the Inklings actually met and where the Narnia books were shaped. There is no narrative reason for it to appear. Its inclusion isn’t an accident, but a deliberate choice.
In an adaptation already altering the source’s theology and metaphysics, the destruction of the physical site where those ideas were forged functions as a symbolic act: the origin point of the story is targeted and erased by the very antagonist the books exist to defeat. That is the definition of desecration, not homage.
It's possible to grant that a person loves Jesus while also acknowledging that their theology sucks. Apply this to the #Narnia movie debate in whatever way seems best to you. (My basic point here is that feelings don't matter when evaluating an adaptation.)
Video round-up: @thechosentv released a new Season 6 trailer (and is hosting a Seasons 4-5 watch party on Sunday), three new clips from #DanielandtheFieryFurnace were released as part of a 101-minute interview with one of the directors, and #ThePromisedLand has new bonus videos.
Oh, right -- #Netflix released the #Narnia trailer one day before they announced their biggest round of layoffs in over four years. Hmmm.
Greta Gerwig’s $280M ‘NARNIA’ is reportedly raising concerns at Netflix after a test screening, with insiders calling the film “awful”.
The production has undergone reshoots amid those concerns.

It should go without saying, but Gerwig's feelings about Narnia are actually irrelevant to whether her adaptation is any good. Lewis was passionate about mythology and whatnot but Tolkien still felt free to criticize how he used his sources in the Narnia books, no?

This is giving me film!Wrinkle in Time vibes (pejorative)
In the book, the worlds they travel to are *real* worlds. The Wood has pools with *real* water.
Here everything outside London feels screensaver-y. I can’t imagine these worlds preexisting their visits.
My notes on #TheChosen S5E4. The biblical Jesus spent every day in the Temple and every night in Bethany during his last week before the Crucifixion, but the Jesus of The Chosen... doesn't. Link in the next tweet.
I liked the new #Carrie more than not -- it's very good at executing a certain kind of tone, etc. -- but the shift from tragic monster to empowered heroine is awkward, and there are some glaring plot holes that I can't really get into without talking spoilers.
