The client is basically irrelevant in this day and age. Anyone could build one better than Steam and it wouldn't even be hard. I only bring it up because it's what everyone talks about when defending Steam. Like it's still 2024 and these things are hard. Steams only remaining value is it's network.

"Folks" is insidious, I think. I *really* haven't seen a solid honest explanation of "why is this 'great' tool free? Why does it make sense to rely on it strongly without paying for it" and "no free lunch" feels like it should be explored better.
