Speaker Announcement: Don Tsell What happens when Bitcoin media, community and self-sufficiency all meet in one person? We’re excited to welcome Don Tsell to Sovereignty Summit 2027. Don is a respected producer, agent and operator in the Bitcoin media space. He is Executive Producer of The Maxis Club Show and its spinoff, Tselly and Frens, and supports creators, shows and strategic partnerships across the wider Bitcoin ecosystem. But Don’s work doesn’t stop at media. He also owns Chicken Tender Farms, an off-grid bird farm built around self-sufficiency and self-sovereignty, where even the waste has a purpose — including using bird manure as part of the energy story around Bitcoin mining. That mix of media, community, Bitcoin and practical self-reliance makes Don a natural fit for Sovereignty Summit. At the Summit, he’ll bring a grounded perspective on what sovereignty looks like when it moves beyond theory and into the way we work, build, communicate and live. 📍 Coronet Peak, Queenstown, New Zealand 🗓️ 2–3 April 2027 Tickets: sovereigntysummit.nz/tickets @thebitcoinbasin #SovereigntySummit #Bitcoin #SelfSovereignty #BitcoinMedia #OffGrid #Community #Queenstown

I'm tired boss
So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

Looking forward to welcoming @NicoleMckeeMP to Bitkiwi!
Bitkiwi and Bitcoin Policy NZ welcome Hon Nicole McKee (ACT), who will speak at Bitkiwi XVII at 2pm this Saturday at Chou Chou. Ahead of the election, we wrote to every party in Parliament, along with TOP, inviting them to share their position on #Bitcoin with the community. ACT stepped up to the plate. ACT’s digital asset policy, “Unlocking New Zealand’s Digital Economy”, includes a proposed 12-month bright-line test for Bitcoin and a de minimis tax exemption for low-value purchases made with Bitcoin, which @bitcoinpolicynz has advocated for: act.org.nz/unlocking-new-zea… Whatever your politics, come along and hear it directly from @actparty Party Deputy Leader, Hon @NicoleMckeeMP. See you Saturday Bitcoiners!

Ask anyone how many Bitcoin there will ever be and they can tell you: 21 million. Ask how many New Zealand dollars there will ever be, and there's no answer. There's no limit. 2 minutes about why FIAT is making life worse for everyone and one potential solution. youtu.be/k8jRdhZft8c

We created trusted "Certificate Authorities" to gatekeep the security of the internet and one of these was extremely retarded. No one should have authority. Web of trust is the solution.

Asking politicians in NZ about #Bitcoin! I asked @toddmstephenson where @actparty stands on Bitcoin. Last year @TheBitcoinBasin and Bitcoin Policy NZ took Bitcoin to Parliament. Now Act is the first party with a dedicated policy, "Unlocking New Zealand's Digital Economy": 🟠 No tax on Bitcoin held longer than 12 months 🟠 Tax relief for small everyday Bitcoin payments That rewards long term saving and makes spending sats here in NZ actually practical. Election day is 7 November. Ask your candidates where they stand. #Bitcoin #NewZealand #Sovereignty #NZPolitics

this California wealth tax thing is just incredible. so in October 2025, a California healthcare union proposed a "one time" 5% tax on any billionaire's wealth. the ballot measure will be voted on next month. In early December 2025, California announced that it would be a retroactive tax if passed, applying to anyone with CA residency as of Jan 1, 2026. The objective is to pay for Medi-Cal, California's incredibly dysfunctional healthcare system. (which also functions as a glorified welfare apparatus, but that's a discussion for another time). polls reveal that the CA electorate is split around 50/50 on the tax, but prediction markets only give Prop 40 a ~23% chance of passing (there are competing measures on the ballet that would nullify it). there are 200 billionaires in CA, worth collectively somewhere between $2.3 and $2.6 trillion. 5% of that is around $100b, accounting for a small amount of attrition. proponents of the tax forecasted a significant windfall, assuming only a 10% departure rate. supporters thought they were being clever with the retroactive concept. no billionares would leave CA in the few short months between the tax being proposed and the residency cutoff date, without the tax even having passed yet, right? well as it turns out, they did. a new paper [1] from two academics at Stanford called "The Net Present Value of the California Billionaire Tax Act", argues that not only did more billionaires leave due to the proposed tax than its proponents expected, but that the value of the tax, if it does pass, is actually negative. proponents of the tax only assumed 10% avoidance, that is, only 10% of the taxable base of targeted billionaires would leave CA within the very short Oct-Dec 2025 window. Jaros and Rauh, the Stanford academics, find that a lower bound of 28.6% of the taxable base managed to leave. just based on known departures, those departures total $577b in net worth, or $28.8b in potential tax lost. this of course does not capture everyone (many left without announcing their departure), so the authors normalize to departure rates estimated from other wealth tax events, and apply other discounts for litigation, arriving arrive at a figure of only $28-$36b in forecasted tax revenues. but this isn't all! all of the income taxes paid by the departed billionaires are also forsaken. the authors estimate that CA billionaires pay $3.3- 5.8b in annual income taxes. they assume a midpoint of $2b lost in annual collections from departed billionaires. the net present value of that lost income stream is -$68.9 billion. so when you add it all up you get: + $30b one-time tax windfall (estimated) - $69b in present value of lost future income taxes = - 38.9b overall net present value of the tax of course, this analysis is highly estimate driven. the authors simulate the parameters 100k times and find a negative NPV of the implemented tax 85 percent of the time. and if the tax doesn't pass, which it's not looking like it will, California still ended up losing at least $577b in departed net worth, and they have permanently poisoned the well with entrepreneurs who will now worry about future wealth taxes. Surround yourself with people who see a flying car and say, "Awesome!" Not people who see a flying car and say, "It's not actually flying" or "I don't see the point." This post is not about cars :)
