Looking forward to welcoming @NicoleMckeeMP to Bitkiwi!
Bitkiwi and Bitcoin Policy NZ welcome Hon Nicole McKee (ACT), who will speak at Bitkiwi XVII at 2pm this Saturday at Chou Chou.
Ahead of the election, we wrote to every party in Parliament, along with TOP, inviting them to share their position on #Bitcoin with the community.
ACT stepped up to the plate.
ACT’s digital asset policy, “Unlocking New Zealand’s Digital Economy”, includes a proposed 12-month bright-line test for Bitcoin and a de minimis tax exemption for low-value purchases made with Bitcoin, which @bitcoinpolicynz has advocated for:

Gold miner. Bitcoiner. Homeschooling dad.
Michael O’Keefe found Bitcoin in a digger listening to The Bitcoin Standard. Bought near the top. Stacked harder on the way down.
New Key to Sovereignty episode, Michael is joining us at @SovSummitNZ in @TheBitcoinBasin In April next year.

Odd places, cheap power. The renewables wasted in the last 24h were enough to power 175% of the Bitcoin network.
Vitalik Buterin's cost tables help explain why Bitcoin miners keep showing up in odd places. Electricity is about 46% of the cost of mining one Bitcoin, with compute gear at about 40%. For an AI inference GPU, electricity is under 5% of the yearly cost and the compute gear is about 76%.
That gap decides who chases cheap power. A miner's margin moves with every cent on the power bill, so mining goes where electricity is stranded, curtailed or nearly free, and it can shut off when the grid needs that power back. An AI data center has to keep costly chips busy around the clock, and power is a small slice of its bill, so it can pay up for steady, reliable power.
For Bitcoin, that means mining and AI mostly bid for different megawatts, and miners keep the edge on the cheapest and least reliable power on the grid.
The answer was 2009 (3 January, to be exact). Got it? Get your team on the board. Teams of up to five, and the top three take home a stack of Stacked gear. Sat 24 Oct, 5pm, Chouchou.

One day of wasted renewables, in ten seconds.
674 GWh. Curtailed, spilled, or zero-priced.
Enough energy to power 169% of the Bitcoin network. Monday was 175%.

The 17th edition of Bitkiwi will take place in the nation’s capital, two weeks before the NZ general election.
So as well as the chance to mingle with other Bitcoiners, chat, and learn, we'll have a couple of speakers, with a little bit of a political/regulatory theme... /2
