I visited Jamia Millia Islamia, my alma mater, with my 78-year-old father, Prof. V. K. Tripathi. I returned deeply saddened.
The gates were shut, students were protesting for union elections, and police were everywhere. Why does a matter between students and their administration require such heavy police presence? These are students, not criminals!
My father was encouraging students, explaining the importance of peaceful protest and distributing pamphlets. Even he faced police intimidation. While I was speaking to a few young women, we were warned to disperse as girls were reportedly being detained. The atmosphere was filled with fear.
I heard no abusive slogans, witnessed no violence. Just students demanding to be heard.
Universities should be spaces for questioning, dissent and dialogue, not fear and intimidation.
Standing outside, speaking to students through the iron bars, I wondered who was being held captive, those inside or those outside.
How on earth did Bollywood gossip suddenly land on my TL?
