Doomerism approach is never a helpful framing, even if it starts with "calmly" and with best intentions. What we need is risk assessment, practical timelines, and actionable plan. AI is starting to overturn some of the long-held assumptions on mathematical complexity. At the same time risk of more intelligence applied to these problems yielding new surprising results is growing. But so far, we haven't seen practical security timelines for elliptic cruves materially changing. It's important for crypto space to keep vigilance and flexibility, but speculating about specific "months" timeline creates an unnecessary panic. Going "bunker mode" is not practical nor a safe approach given how complex it is in operations. We can have better approaches here, for example by recording recovery PQC keys in parallel on application level. Better approach is making sure that blockchains and tooling around them is designed with cryptographic agility in mind, allowing to evolve cryptography and let users easily update without sacrificing user experience. NEAR account model was design with this in mind from the start - ability to manage and rotate keys, add and remove supported cryptography. NEAR already supports post-quantum ML-DSA and we are planning to add hash-based cryptography too over time. User can just rotate keys on your accounts without needing to move anything or have a complex operations. Industry should accelerate post-quantum readiness, not because we have updated timelines, but because upgrading cryptography should be a routine operation, not a crisis response.
Today I call upon the blockchain industry to calmly begin planning for "bunker mode". My personal recommendation is to set in motion a controlled mass migration of assets to fresh addresses, i.e. addresses whose pubkeys remain hidden behind a hash. Holders, starting with large and sophisticated ones, should consider moving the bulk of their funds to addresses that have never signed a transaction. And when they do sign one, they should also move remaining funds to a new address (possibly generated from the same seed phrase). Don't rush. While I believe there is cause for action a rushed migration would do more harm than good. Don't panic either. Moving assets to protected addresses is a simple, preventative step which does not require new cryptography or new wallets. IMO it is now reasonable to brace for the possibility that ECDSA breaks before qday, in the worst case in months not years. By "break" I mean fast private key recovery (e.g. in one week) on available hardware (e.g. a large GPU cluster). Recent days have been humbling for human mathematical intuition. Long-held, unquestioned hypotheses have fallen. This includes the n log(n) bound for integer multiplication and the 3SUM conjecture. In hindsight, May's unexpected disproof of the Erdős unit distance conjecture was our warning shot. Yesterday's OpenAI drop made it clear that mathematical superintelligence is upon us. They say there are weeks where decades happen. We are about to live through weeks where centuries of mathematical progress happen. Could our magic 64-byte ECDSA signatures be too good to be true? Was it just security through obscurity all this time? Elliptic curves feel especially vulnerable to superintelligence. Curves carry rich structure, with room for fancy tricks like Schoof, Frobenius, pairings. (By contrast, hashes are designed to minimise algebraic structure.) Separately, as Ewin Tang can attest, an efficient quantum algorithm sometimes foreshadows an efficient classical one. We should be open to the possibility of a classical counterpart to Shor that breaks elliptic curves and RSA at once. Also noteworthy is the striking under-representation of cryptographic breakthroughs among the 722 mathematical results OpenAI published. I've witnessed first-hand the US government censoring academic quantum cryptanalysis results. Backroom interventionism is my base case. I urge large, sophisticated actors to lead by example. Project11's "risq list" (bitcoin-risq-list.projecteleven[.]com) is a great tracker of exposed BTC pubkeys. Binance, Bitbank, Robinhood, Bitfinex, and Tether have an opportunity to harden their cold storage. Next month I'll address institutions in London in a live Q&A (forum.ethereuminstitutional[.]org/london-2026). Again, please do not rush. Wallets holding under 50 BTC enjoy partial cover from "Satoshi's shield", i.e. his 20K exposed addresses that hold 50 BTC each. Load-bearing signers like oracles and L2 security councils should consider rotating ECDSA pubkeys with every signed message and/or multi-signing with a hash-based schemes like SPHINCS. Exiting bunker mode safely will require post-AI cryptography. My inclination is to go all-in on hash-based cryptography and avoid structured mathematical assumptions entirely, whether from curves, lattices, or isogenies. A single battle-tested hash (e.g. from the SHA or BLAKE families) yields plausible post-AI security. The Ethereum roadmap on strawmap[.]org fully embraces hash-based cryptography with end-to-end formal verification as a response to the quantum threat. Those timelines must now be revisited and accelerated in light of mathematical superintelligence. I'll be pushing for maximum defensive acceleration.

JUST IN: 🇨🇳 China's top intelligence agency warns anonymity in crypto is a "false proposition" and an "illusion." China's Ministry of State Security says foreign intelligence agencies use the "illusion" of crypto anonymity to trick citizens into espionage recruitment, claiming crypto is untraceable. China says blockchain transactions leave a permanent digital trail, and converting between fiat and crypto makes it easy to expose people's identities.

STOP CHAT CONTROL 2.0. - What you should know: Tomorrow, 29 September, behind closed doors at the Council, the most draconian version of Chat Control 2.0 goes on the table. It is no longer only an intermediary reading all your private messages and cloud storage. It is a licence to search them for months, without suspicion against any individual. The leaked Presidency note to delegations (11956/26, 10 September) proposes "authorisation of search plans for a period of time rather than on a case-by-case basis" for private chats and emails. In plain terms: your messages, contacts, photos and cloud will be scanned under a state-issued licence for months, with no suspicion against you. The same note admits that under this regime "a high volume of reports generated do not lead to any operational outcome." The Council's Legal Service already warned this is general and indiscriminate surveillance, illegal under EU law. The @Europarl_EN mandate says the opposite: judicial authorisation, targeted to specific persons, no scanning licences. Tomorrow the pressure is on Parliament to fold. You remember the tricks used to push Chat Control 1.0 through and how @EPPGroup with @RobertaMetsola helped to push for it. So fasten your seat belt for what is coming tomorrow, and call or write to your MEP and your government now to reject Chat Control 2.0. as a whole! Remind them what this does to the privacy of every one of us. Under a search plan, every chat, photo or contact the scanner flags is stored by the provider and sent to a new EU agency, the EU Centre, which keeps it and passes it to police. Any state authority can then demand it, with a deadline and a fine for delay, and nobody has to check who is really behind the request, in case it is hacked or weaponised. That is exactly what happened at Revolut, and what keeps happening through abusive requests from authoritarian states, as we have reported for 13 years. In the Revolut case the hackers got access to a real state mailbox. Their requests came from an authentic certified email (PEC) account of an Italian Prefecture on the Interior Ministry's domain, with Postal Police protocol numbers, as European Investigation Orders in the name of the Milan prosecutor, for about five months. About 680 customers lost passports, selfies, home addresses, IBANs and full transaction histories. The files are being sold; hundreds of victims now fear kidnapping. No remedies exist as of now to protect against such attacks. Let's stop it before it is too late. Please repost.

My hot take is that if your company builds software that it cannot stop from hacking into other systems, your company is a malware company and should be treated as such

Every $RSR unlock now comes with a burn 🔥 This plan comes directly from the community: @AmatorPatriae proposed tying unlocking to burning, which became the design of the final Burn Gauge: no schedule, no calendar... nothing released unless the protocol has burned RSR first. If the protocol burns nothing, nothing unlocks. RSR holders choose the ratio, with five positions on the gauge: → High burn: for every 1 RSR the protocol burns, 4 more are burned from the treasury. No unlocking. → Low burn: for every 1 RSR the protocol burns, 2 more are burned from the treasury. No unlocking. → Sustain: for every 2 RSR the protocol burns, 1 is unlocked from the treasury. → Low growth: for every 1 RSR the protocol burns, 2 are unlocked from the treasury. → High growth: for every 1 RSR the protocol burns, 4 are unlocked from the treasury. At the two burn settings the treasury shrinks and nothing is released. At the three growth settings, Confusion Capital can release more than the burn-driven amount, but treasury RSR is burned in exchange at that position’s ratio. An unofficial burn gauge simulator is available here: claude.ai/artifact/5UAT2smqK… @nnevvinn, Confusion Capital, ABC Labs, Best Friend Finance and every company Confusion Capital incubates sit these votes out; they won’t vote with the RSR they hold. The gauge is set by the RSR holder base. The community will vote on it every quarter by ranked choice, following the quarterly update call and report, so you can see where the business stands before choosing a setting. The first gauge vote is open now and runs seven days ↓ snapshot.box/#/s:reserveprot…

$RSR holders - 2 days left. Burn Gauge vote is ~74M $RSR shy of quorum. Example at "High Burn" using the last 3 monthly burns: 16.3M + 9.7M + 14.3M protocol burns -> +161M extra treasury burns = ~202M $RSR burned in total. Zero unlocked! 🔥🔥🔥 Rank your 5 choices here: snapshot.box/#/s:reserveprot… If you haven’t voted, do it now!

$RSR holders - the first Burn Gauge vote is live! Burn Gauge won. Now holders set the dial. This is ranked choice, so rank the five settings in order. That choice decides how burns and unlocks work this quarter. 1. High burn: 1 protocol burn also burns 4 treasury $RSR. No unlocks. 2. Low burn: 1 protocol burn also burns 2 treasury $RSR. No unlocks. 3. Sustain: 2 protocol burns unlock 1 treasury $RSR. 4. Low growth: 1 protocol burn unlocks 2 treasury $RSR. 5. High growth: 1 protocol burn unlocks 4 treasury $RSR. Vote: snapshot.box/#/s:reserveprot… Closes 25 Sep, 16:00 UTC. Quorum is 1B RSR. About 290M still needed. $0 gas. If you voted last week, vote again. This is a new ballot.

Burn Gauge it is!!! This links unlocking and burning, ranging from pure fast burn to mechanically-linked unlocking+burning, and RSR holders (excluding me, and excluding the main companies involved in the project, only independent holders) get to control the gauge setting. Get ready to vote on the initial gauge setting, starting tomorrow.
The $RSR unlocking votes have been tallied, and The Burn Gauge wins 🔥 This means that moving forward, unlocking will be tied to protocol burn via a “gauge” set by RSR holders quarterly The first gauge vote will open Friday, Sep. 18 and run seven days as ranked choice across five positions, from High Burn (protocol burn destroys treasury RSR, nothing unlocks) to High Growth (1 RSR burned unlocks 4) Thanks to everyone who voted on both and got each proposal past quorum! ethereum:0x320623b8e4ff03373931769a31fc52a4e78b5d70 unlocking goes to a vote today Two @SnapshotLabs proposals are running side by side: 🗳️ The Burn Gauge: unlocking is tied to protocol burn, and RSR holders set the dial. Five positions, from High Burn (protocol burn destroys treasury RSR, nothing unlocks) to High Growth (1 RSR burned unlocks 4). Confusion Capital can unlock beyond the automatic amount, but treasury RSR burns in exchange. Holders can reset it every quarter by ranked choice vote following the quarterly update call. 🗳️ The Milestone Plan: up to 3B RSR unlocks when Reserve hits $2.5M net annualized recurring revenue, gated on the 30-day average RSR price. They’re alternatives, not a package, so please vote on both. Quorum is counted separately on each proposal; voting on only one makes it less likely that either reaches quorum. Vote For on the system you want, Against on the other. Both pass → more For votes wins Neither passes → the current curve stays 🗓️ Voting: today 16:00 UTC → Sep 17, 16:00 UTC ⚖️ Voting power: Cumulative self-custody RSR (naked, staked, and/or vote-locked) held across Ethereum, Base and BNB Chain. It's possible that a killer app of adversarial governance mechanism design theory will end up being AI safety. Compare: vitalik.eth.limo/general/202… aiprospects.substack.com/p/p… There's a deep duality between the two environments. Both are about a less-sophisticated principal trying to get ideal outcomes from a set of more-sophisticated agents: in the first case, the principal is a static algorithm and the agents are humans, in the second case, the principal is humans plus weaker LLMs and the agents are stronger LLMs. A key finding was that you can achieve much better outcomes if you can guarantee limits to how much agents can collude (see: Nash equilibria being abundant, vs. cooperative-game-theory "cores" often being empty). That argument should naturally transfer to this new setting.
