Ever wondered why Design Patterns didn't take off? How did they become both all-pervasive and soulless? Those were the sparking thoughts behind this book. It's taken four years of research and way too much of my spare time. Go check out Unresolved Forces: unresolvedforces.com/
I see people following me on here. Well, I'm not on here. I'm on mastodon.gamedev.place/@fabs

Question for Python developers, is it ever a good design decision to use isinstance?

Question for C++ object oriented developers: is it ever a good design decision to use rtti?

briefly mentioned it in a tweet earlier but i'm finding this super useful at the moment and thought I'd share: a fun character development exercise from @WritingExcuses:
The three-pronged character development slider (not for building but for troubleshooting)
Realised that there's really strong parallels between modern EV car UX design and Slovakian shawl makers:
techpod.content.town/episode…
Incredibly poor UX, probably because the designers' process was either traditional or modern, but not generative.

Everyone else:
Them: this would be great for everyone else!
Everyone else: why not you?
Them: I'm not just a normal person; I'm purpose-driven, with a need to express myself and I have a calling.
Everyone else: <blinks in Maslow>
The problem with not "knowing stuff" is that you don't even know what you don't know. You never make connections, never invent, just consume. This is a goal for an imagined person an AI org might target, but why is it never "for me"?
It's because agency is required to be alive.
Allen lives in the land of the complicated, Ryan lives in the land of the complex. For Allen, he senses and analyses. For Ryan, he must probe before sensing. Use the Cynefin framework to understand the difference @allenholub, your work is more tractable.

An essential difference I see is that oftentimes when I'm in the debugger, the question I'm asking is not "is x 5?" but rather "what is the current value of x right now, and then what does x become when I run the app for 5 more seconds?"

As well as writing a book on design patterns, I also wrote this little (rather pretentious) story on art and evolution: amazon.com/gp/aw/d/191647871…
I hope you like it.
