The argument that private healthcare relieves pressure on the public system is misleading.
Private care profits from failures of the public system and patients’ desperation for timely treatment.

New Zealand’s health system has been plagued by short-term thinking for decades and major reform is needed.
The data highlighted major differences in access and care by region – the so-called “postcode lottery”, writes @Otago's @robingauld.

New Zealand's major health restructure has a fundamental funding issue. As @otago's @robingauld writes, the government needs to make deeper changes if it wants to achieve an "equitable system". #nzpol bit.ly/36QHJkG

The perfect storm? Waves of summer arrivals from Auckland, seeding Covid-19 outbreaks in the remotest communities, among some of the most vulnerable, least vaccinated populations, in places where health provision is scarce and hospitals a long way away.

6. Better, linked data across the entire care trajectory across many countries is still needed.
Major data gaps exist/not available for research, which limits learnings from international comparisons.
Only a few countries can track patients across 7 domains of care. 8/10

5. Substantial variation in health outcomes across countries - does not appear to be correlated with spending
While US performs relatively well in short-term (mortality & readmissions), it's among worst in long-term at 1yr
In England, high mortality rates are concerning. 7/10

4. Drivers of high spending differ across countries
In US, "it's still the prices, stupid!" US pays more across each care setting when accounting for utilization
Other contributors? Way more costly rehab care and relatively more specialty care
Care in England is cheap! 6/10

As for spending on outpatient drugs, the US is really winning!
Much higher levels of spending in the US on outpatient drugs over the course of 1yr despite being in the middle of the pack when it comes to unique drug prescriptions. 5/10
