In 1948 wheelchair users were not allowed to attend college classes. One of Mom’s mentors, Dr. Timothy Nugent knew that was not right and changed all of that when he fought against the academic system - dedicating 64 years to disability access. He became the Grandfather of Disability Access. In 2010 service dogs were not allowed in laboratories. Mom also knew that was not right and by being INSISTENT she fought against the academic system to get polices in place and provide guidance on how to accommodate service dog handlers on labs! We’ve seen a growing number of service dog handlers now in science programs! Change can be made. Positive change can happen. It is an honor for me to have been the role model others needed and the Ambassador for service dogs in science! Mom and Pax will continue my legacy and educate and raise awareness with a hands on approach so that n the future service dog handlers will ALL have equal access and may never know there was a time there were barriers that would prevent them from moving forward. They will simply get to follow their dreams and accomplish their goals. #servicedog #science #disability #access

Sometimes a small detail in a painting has as much or even more impact than the complete work itself ~ here’s the totally bereft Mary Magdalene lamenting the death of Christ, in a corner of Giottino di Pietro (aka Giottino)’s Pietà of San Remigio (1365) Uffizi, Florence

OPERATION MARSHMALLOW FLOOF: COMPLETE! Happy FriYAY! The floof has been fluffed, the marshmallow has been restored, and I am once again operating at maximum levels of handsome! Mom says I'm looking extra fluffy and adorable. I say it's important to maintain one's distinguished appearance, even in retirement! Now, if you'll excuse me, all this floof maintenance has exhausted me. Today is the day for for a well-earned snoozle! Stay floofy my frens!

I’m greedy! I would count the whole of the B minor Mass as one work and take that—my Desert Island piece for the whole of my adult life! It says a lot about RVW that he would pick the ‘Cum sancto spirito’—such positive, joyous, life-affirming music! share.google/FnoYUCE8oCf1tDv…
A strong vote for Bach here from RVW! What would you save? 🤔

What does a happy elephant sound like? Turn up the volume and find out. Elephants put the ‘happy’ in reunion. Wild herds erupt into joyous trumpets and trunk hugs when a long-absent loved one returns, and our orphans do the same. When Keeper Joseph came back from leave, Kaikai and Bungalu were beyond elated, greeting him with rumbles and trunk hugs. Both calves lost their mothers, and little Bungalu even survived a lion attack. Raised by Keepers like Joseph, they will one day reclaim their place in the wild. Discover their rescue stories and support their journeys by adopting: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o…

Just watched this. What a fascinating—and at times deeply moving—documentary. So many of the defining historical moments of my life were seen though his lens. Congratulations, @JohnSimpsonNews
I’m celebrating (if that’s quite the right word) the 60th anniversary of my arrival at the BBC in 1996. Tomorrow (Tues) at 9 pm BBC Two will mark it with a documentary, which will then be available on iPlayer. It’s been made by the brilliant Simon Lister, and does me proud.

It was a clash of the bidders in the #SothebysNewYork saleroom tonight. This Roman marble torso carved a new world record for an ancient classical sculpture sold at auction. After 14 minutes of fiery bidding, it triumphed to $34.3 million in the Magnum Opus Evening Auction. This marble torso hails from the 1st century A.D., the earliest days of the Roman Empire. With its exceptional carvings and commanding scale, the torso would have projected the supremacy of Rome to all who encountered it 2,000 years ago. The landmark evening auction saw white-glove results, with 100% of lots sold. The Magnum Opus sale series continues tomorrow with Act II: Figure & Form and Act III: Darkness & Light. Register to bid at the link in bio.

The media coverage of the awful Aberfan disaster might also mention the incredible gesture of solidarity of the people of Aberfan, sending parcels of toys & clothes which had belonged to their dead children, to Florence when it suffered devastating floods two weeks later. #bbc

Nansi Williams was a dinner lady at Pantglas Junior School when the slurry hit. She threw herself over the children nearest to her. Five survived. She didn’t. On 30 October a Purple Plaque will bear her name. Today we remember #Aberfan, and Nansi. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cw1m…

Stunning playing from #SherriLun on InTune with @PetrocTrelawny I’ve heard Beethoven Op. 110 many times—her performance was special. Wish I could go to the lunchtime recital at Wigmore Hall but alas I have some work to finish… I think we’ll be hearing a lot of this young pianist

Is this the greatest ever opening line to a last chapter? Here is 'Reader - I married him' in Charlotte Bronte's own handwriting. Charlotte received her author copies of her first published book #otd 1847. Happy Jane Eyre day!

Such a loss…
Remembering one of the greatest operatic baritones of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, #DmitriHvorostovsky, on his birthday (born October 16, 1962) 🎂🎶🌹 Even after a terminal brain tumor diagnosis in 2015, he continued to perform until shortly before his death in 2017.

🔴 Day 1,852 since the Taliban stopped secondary age girls from going to school in #Afghanistan. For more than five years, Afghan girls have been robbed of their dreams and their futures. This treatment cannot be normalised any longer. The world must wake up and condemn this injustice. You are not forgotten. #LetAfghanGirlsLearn #AfghanWomen
