The key lesson of the Trump victory for us is that Labour has to deliver the significant improvement in quality of life that people can feel or we face the rise of right wing populism that has swept America. Half measures won’t be enough.

The decimation of libraries probably affects under 5s - the age where reading for pleasure is established - more than any other group. Books for little kids are short and expensive, but you used to be able to go to a library and take 5 different ones home every week.

Further evidence of the corporate capture of the Labour Party. Amazon gives money to Tony Blair’s think tank TBI. TBI develops policies and lobbies Labour. Those policies benefit Amazon. See how it works?

in a shocking twist, climate change is infinitely more disruptive and deadly than the actions of those trying to thwart it! good job we threw them all in jail though!
Valencia this morning. A jaw-dropping 343 mm of rain was recorded in just 4 hours yesterday, between 4:30pm and 8:30pm.

It’s literally impossible to become a billionaire without monopolising the wealth created by others, and the fact that senior BBC presenters seem unable even to conceive of this reality is extraordinary.
To become one of the BBC's big name, lavishly paid presenters, the *only* hard and fast criterion is that you have never had a thought in your life and you are aggressively proud of that fact. @Emmabarnett

Will we ever know the names & stories of 118,000+ people killed by Israel in Gaza? Or the people burned alive after Israeli strikes on Al Aqsa Hospital, where displaced Palestinians sheltered? The UK is complicit in these war crimes. End ALL arms sales & diplomatic support NOW.

CEO of water companies pump shit into our rivers - no consequences. Two youngsters throw soup over the glass covering a famous painting as a political protest - two years in prison. Injustice system.
🥫 BREAKING: 3 YEARS 8 MONTHS COMBINED IN PRISON FOR THROWING SOUP ⛓️ Phoebe and Anna have just been sentenced to 2 years and 20 months in prison respectively after throwing soup over the glass frame of Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers'. 🚔 Phoebe received a further 3 months for marching in the road for 20 minutes.

If the JSO's tactic is to make explicit the contradictions at play in an economic system that is literally fine with wiping out ecosystems (and also people), but mortified by the *potential* threat to private property, then it's working because i'm losing my head here

Someone heckles Keir Starmer about the mass slaughter of children in Gaza. Starmer laughs and suggests he got his pass from the 2019 Labour conference. Genuinely vile behaviour.

wonder how many people voted labour hoping that they would fund the NHS even less than the tories
Britain risks becoming ‘an NHS with a country attached’, Wes Streeting warns ‘If we keep on assuming we spend ever increasing amounts of taxpayers money on the NHS it will overwhelm the public sector, dwarf other areas of government spending and we will end up with an NHS with a country attached to it ‘Very penny that is wasted is a penny that could have gone into housing, or early years education, or poverty reduction measures’

This would mean just 0.3% of all UK millionaires leaving if taxes on the super-rich go up
the idea of 9,000 millionaires leaving Britain sounds dramatic until you remember there are 2,849,000 millionaires in this country it’s literally a rounding error given the ebb and flow of migration

We're sad to see the passing of James Earl Jones today. Jones, the voice of Darth Vader, Mufasa and other monumental roles, was an astounding talent, one of the finest actors of the century, and a person who stammers with an iconic, beloved, recognisable and versatile voice.

this is a huge piece of whats missing in much of the debate around winter fuel allowance. idea that, in protecting everyone we might accidentally keep too many people warm is ludicrous. the balance can be struck by increasing taxation without risking anyone falling through gaps
Few people actually want to hand rich pensioners winter fuel help but doing so has more value than just cash. It makes the case for universalism to the public (vital in protecting benefits from cuts) whilst catching those unlikely to claim. Giving it to the rich helps the poor.

The richest 1% of Britons hold more wealth than 70% of the population, and the four richest individuals have more wealth than 20 million Britons. Austerity is, and always has been, a political choice.
