Nelson brayed on Wednesday, which he has done twice in his life, and both previous times it was about hay.
This was not about hay.
You have to understand Nelson to understand the size of it. He is a small grey donkey who came free with a horse and has spent every day since assessing the world and finding almost none of it worth a reaction. A pheasant out of the hedge: beneath comment. A carrier bag on the wind: management's problem. The farrier, the vet, Martin the postman at the gate every single morning: all filed, long ago, under fine. Nelson does not spend adrenaline. He has a lifetime's supply precisely because he has never once dipped into it for anything that did not concern the hay.
Hector is the one who comes apart. Seventeen years a Cavalry Black, seventeen hands of trained composure, and still, in a quiet field, undone by small things with no rules to them. And undone completely, every time, by the one thing that has never had a rule: Nelson leaving the field.
On Wednesday it was the other way round.
Hector went down in the morning and did not get up cleanly. Nothing dramatic to look at, a big old horse struggling on wet ground to fold his legs back under him, the way big old horses sometimes do, more indignity than danger. But he was down, and he was working at it, and he was not managing it, and the field was suddenly a place where the large warm reliable thing was not upright.
Nelson stood over him.
Then Nelson, who assesses everything and hurries for nothing and does not raise the alarm because in his considered view nothing is ever worth waking a tired horse for, raised the alarm. The full cracked bugle of it, flung down the lane, on and on, a donkey who does not do this doing this, until the farmer came out of the house at a run, because a silent donkey suddenly loud means something is wrong in a way a noisy one never could.
The farmer got Hector up. It was fine. It was, in the end, a big horse and a bad patch of ground and a bruised dignity, nothing more.
Nelson stopped the moment Hector was on his feet.
He has not mentioned it since. He went back to the hay. He has assessed the incident and, by every sign available, filed it under dealt with.
But he broke his own rule for it. In a whole life of spending no adrenaline on anything, he spent all of it at once, on the one thing he has never admitted to caring about.
Hector is grazing this morning, upright, enormous, fine.
Nelson is beside him, in the dry corner, first at the hay, saying nothing.
He would tell you it was about the hay.

In August my wife and I and our son Charlie have been invited up to just north of Lochinver to stay with friends for a bit of a beach, boat and Highlands holiday - absolute heaven.
My wife will head south with friends on the 22nd and I'm planning on taking Charlie off for a bit of a boys road trip around Scotland and then a round about route back down south.
Charlie is obsessed with cars and farm machinery so we are kicking off with trying to cover the Grand Tour's P.E.N.I.S. 287 (Piloting Extremely Nicely in Scotland 287) route, a driving enthusiast's version of the NC500 and then we will wiggle our way south hoping to drop in to see friends and trying to find destinations of interest to Charlie as we head south.
He is 18, but had major seizures as a baby leading to delayed development and dyspraxia, although most don't realise meeting him.
I have no set planned route or timescales for getting back to Herefordshire, to coin a corny modern phrase I want to 'make memories' for Charlie, who doesn't get much out of his life, unlike his sisters, so looking for suggestions of places to visit as we head south.
Farms with cool kit will tick most of the boxes, especially to watch a bit of combining, but he does appreciate stunning scenery and lovely drives as well, hence wanting to make the most of our time in Scotland.
So, if you know of any farms with cool kit that won't mind a visitor just to stand and watch the chaos of harvest, or can provide a trip out in an argocat, are anything random like that, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you have the misfortune to end up with a Green councillor on Friday don’t despair! Make them work! Report every pothole, every cracked paving stone, every piece of dog shit, every late bin collection. And get your fellow residents to do the same.
Attend council meetings. Go to surgeries. Complain about your council tax bill.
Keep them on their feet. Remind them local politics isn’t about palestine - it’s about pavements and potholes.

A sinistra, Zack Polanski, leader del partito britannico dei Verdi.
A destra - non è uno scherzo, il suo numero due, la cui moglie gira in burqa.

BREAKING NEWS: “Starmer denies knowing he was Prime Minister”
Sir Kier Starmer has revealed that no one told him until last Tuesday he won the 2024 election and had become PM.
He told Beth Rigby “I was totally kept in the dark by my officials. I’m really angry about it.”

The worrying thing about this country is how childishly celebrity politics has become .
The accolades about Hanna Spencer's maiden speech in Parliament, simply because she used Google to list some memorable women on International Women's' Day is dumbfounding !
Dressed like a children's entertainer with a ghastly colour scheme that looks like she can't make her mind up what colour to paint the nursery was just one of her many eclectic outfits she's worn so far .
The 80/20 wool mix Axminster carpet she wore as a coat and the borrowed headscarf from Princess Anne so she could get in the foyer of a mosque during her campaigning where some of the highlights of her piercing insight

I can only find trace of her installing overpriced heat pumps that can be in your home with 36 crippling installments part of her Green energy initiative.
