10 years ago my wife, the mum of our kids & the MP for Batley&Spen was killed by a far right extremist.
At anniversaries I try to be optimistic about the future. But not this time. In the ten years since she was killed we have gone backwards & I fear our democracy is now at risk

Near-miss reporting rates are one of the most powerful predictors of site safety.
High reporting = high awareness = strong culture.
Low reporting = workers don't feel safe speaking up.
If your site has low near-miss reports - don't celebrate.
Investigate why that is.

Before any high-risk task, ask your team 3 questions:
1. What could go wrong today that didn't go wrong yesterday?
2. What are we most likely to skip when we're under pressure?
3. If someone new joined us right now, what wouldn't they know?
Those answers are your real risk assessment.
The paperwork bit comes after the thinking.

6:00am was the safety briefing.
A contractor didn’t sleep.
Arrived late.
Up fighting with his wife most of the night.
He was fuming.
Grabbed his tools.
Then rushed on to the site.
Was not in the right mindset.
This is when your safety system either works or it doesn’t.

Might be a technical psychology term... but very easy to get your head around.
"Normalisation of deviance,” it hit me hard when I first heard it.
It's when you quietly accept lower standards as "normal" because nothing bad has happened... yet.
No drama.
Just small, sensible shortcuts that feel efficient.
"We've always done it this way."
The Challenger Disaster showed it perfectly:
"O-rings performed outside limits before - until they didn't."
Good people, simply getting the job done, slowly drift from written rules to "real" ones.
Once you see the gap between how work “should” happen and how it “actually” happens, you can't unsee it.
Watch behaviour and listen to the language...
because that's exactly where the term lives.

That's the house we are meant to forget in the deluge of dog whistle stories he is coming out with to deflect from Nathan Gill the Russian bribes man Farage was in charge of as Leader
Big love for @GaryLineker & all he stands for.

Man I love my country 🇬🇧 On the train today, two girls without tickets started kicking off at the conductors, calling them 'fat slags', 'fucking lesbians' and all sorts. A non-white foreign passenger steps in, so they start firing racist abuse, telling him to 'go back where he came from' and that Farage & Anderson will 'sort his lot out.' Then half the carriage jumped in to back him and the conductors, including an old white man who could barely walk, but wasn't going to let that stop him from giving his two pence. The police were called, and a few of us checked in on the conductors. When all was said and done and the train was moving again, the old man got up and turned to the foreign man and just said "cuppa?" and honestly, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Absolute class act from everyone and a reminder that the vile vocal minority do NOT represent our great country. Call me naive, but I truly believe our country is better than the horrid politics of Reform UK, Nigel Farage, Lee Anderson etc, and when push comes to shove, when shit hits the fan, we know who we are – and man, it really ain't that, no matter how hard people like Farage try to make it so.

Bob faced off with his contract manager in the site office, arguing that cutting corners on PPE would risk injuries.
Armed with real-world examples, he won the debate, securing quality gear for the team.
Weeks later, when an accident was avoided thanks to those reinforcements, even the manager admitted Bob was the site's unsung hero.
Be more like Bob.
