Radar reconstruction of today's (8/22) plume development from the #HawkFire in Reno, NV. Notable transition to a hydraulic like flow late in the day (~00 UTC) linked to dangerous run into town. We were conducting on-site lidar scans during the transition.
Very stable air for this morning's commute, plus a little #wildfire smoke @renoballoon

NV Energy’s Power Safe NV team partnered up with @unevadareno / @UNRScience's Seismology Lab to install a new wildfire camera on top our South Reno building - one of many installed through our ongoing collaboration. These cameras provide early wildfire detection, helping agencies respond quickly and effectively.
🎥 You can view this camera — along with others across Nevada — at AlertWildfire.org or on the Watch Duty app and website at watchduty.org.

Check out this feature of Dr. Neil Lareau's research on spotting during California's Dixie Fire, which was the largest wildfire in California's history. #AGUPubs
Spot fires occur when flying sparks or embers ignite outside the perimeter of the main fire.🔥
A recent study in JGR: Atmospheres reveals that extreme long-range fire spotting occurred during California's Dixie Fire in August 2021, with fires igniting more than 16 kilometers from the source fire.

Big report from Brookings out today on the geography of AI in the US.
Beyond Silicon Valley, there are regional AI hubs emerging in places like Princeton, Austin, and Chapel Hill. Universities play a powerful role, but so do local industries.

Please be kind to campus security over the summer months. Without the students around they get a little bored and they need to make up for lost revenue by writing more tickets to the few faculty who do show up on campus.

To make this map I used a USGS DEM to displace a Blender mesh, QGIS to grab sat imagery, added the image as a material, fidgeted with the sun lighting, and composited the final in photoshop.
Thanks to @sidahuj ’s BlenderMCP, having Claude available to drive Blender is just👌
