The fact that the most powerful superweapon since the nuclear bomb is just being freelanced out of Silicon Valley is fucking insane. Imagine the money flowing into politicians that is allowing this to happen without any oversight.

I have spent 23 years documenting the global LED transition of city lighting from space.
Across my 4 missions to the ISS, I have photographed every major city on Earth, building a data set of the gradual replacement of sodium vapor lighting with LEDs.
The warmer, yellow-orange of gas discharge lamps has been phased out worldwide to multi-colored LEDs, citing energy savings and environmental reasons.
Widespread adoption has markedly changed the way our cities look from orbit, and as many have pointed out, how they feel to those on the ground!
Here is a collection of the most striking before-and-after photos I have observed:

When we were shutting down bases in Afghanistan in 2013, one of the guys in my unit was told he needed to transport a TV back to Bagram because it was on the property book.
He carefully packaged it and after several days of driving, ensuring he didn’t break it, he got it there.
They were given instructions where to drop it off at. When they arrived, a man took their paperwork, signed it, and then destroyed the TV with a sledgehammer.
I think about that story a lot.

🚨🇦🇺 Two of Australia's subsea internet cables, Indigo West and Indigo Central, were damaged last weekend inside the Submarine Cable Protection Zone off Perth. Authorities cited "very suspicious activity from a vessel near the location."
Windward's multi-sensor analysis surfaced one vessel whose movements align with the location and timing of the damage. Here is what each sensor saw:
AIS behavior first: The vessel entered Australia's EEZ on July 28, anchored off Perth, and loitered for nearly two weeks. On July 31 her reported ETA changed to January 1, 2027, a placeholder value typical of vessels with no genuine port call intent. Through August 8–9, the window in which the cables were damaged, her track shows repeated erratic crossings over the cable corridor.
Then the satellites: Windward EO satellite imagery captured her on August 3 at 02:12 UTC, roughly 11 km west of Perth, off Marmion Marine Park. On August 8 at 21:42 UTC, SAR imagery placed her directly on the cable route.
Any one of these signals can be argued with. An AIS track can be dismissed as noise. An EO frame proves presence, not behavior. A SAR return is a bright smudge on a purple field. Stack them and the ambiguity collapses: three independent sensors, one vessel, on the cables, at the time of the cuts.
Fewer than 20 cables carry roughly 99% of Australia's internet traffic. Protecting them starts with knowing which vessel was there, and being able to prove it three different ways.

The psychological impact of the war in #Ukraine, particularly #PTSD among Ukrainian soldiers, is likely to remain a major challenge long after the fighting ends.
I am thinking in particular of the incessant, terrifying buzzing of drones on the front line (and even behind it) and the sense of imminent death that accompanies it. That sound may prove especially difficult to escape: once soldiers return to civilian life, it can be echoed by the sounds of countless everyday objects, potentially triggering memories of the battlefield and the fear associated with them.
