Fanfic being viewed as content to be consumed with no expectation of direct connection to the writer makes sense when we realize it comes from the generation that grew up watching YouTube, seeing community as talking with each other vs. talking directly to the creator.

I think this perfectly encapsulates the fundamental disconnect because using comments as the metric: I don’t mean community as in readers talking to each other. I mean community as readers talking to the writer who is— also— a fellow fan.

I'll stand by my idea that wattpad actually has better community than ao3. it's especially obvious back in the day where you can find a bunch of ppl just chatting amongst e/o on a comment to a random line. I think what went wrong is that ao3's system leaves comments way out of

Like I do in fact scroll down to read what others are saying about a fic but even if I didn’t, the comments aren’t about what what others are saying to each other— it’s a conversation between the reader and the writer.

years ago, I argued that the fandom ecosystem was destroyed when people started seeing fanfic as content to consume vs. being in community with fellow fans. This entire discourse has proven me right.
