My boyfriend introduced me as his coworker at his sister’s wedding. Then his ex walked up and called him her fiancé.
I thought she was joking.
I pulled him aside.
Me: “Why did she call you her fiancé?”
Him: “Please, don’t make a scene. I’ll explain everything when we get home.”
We’d been dating for eleven months.
He’d told me his last relationship ended because his ex was controlling and obsessed with him.
So I trusted him.
But at the wedding, he kept avoiding me.
Whenever someone asked how we knew each other, he said we worked together.
Then his ex approached us again.
She smiled at me.
Her: “So you’re the woman he left me for?”
My boyfriend immediately grabbed her arm.
Him: “We agreed not to discuss this here.”
That was when I realized something was seriously wrong.

I've been the security guard at a 32-storey housing block in Sham Shui Po for nineteen years. I sit by the lifts and watch the same faces go up and down.
Every weekday at 3:40 PM, a boy of about ten in a school uniform got into lift 2 and pressed every button. All thirty-two floors, one by one.
The lift would crawl up, stopping at every floor, doors opening and closing on empty corridors. Residents complained. Someone from the management office told me to "have a word."
I stopped him on the fourth Monday. "Little one, you can't do this. People are waiting."
He looked at me very seriously and said, "Uncle, please. Just today. Just let me finish."
I stepped in with him, because I was curious. At floor 3, the doors opened. The boy leaned out and waved at a closed door. Slowly, the door opened about a hand's width. A wrinkled hand came out and waved back.
At floor 4, it happened again. And floor 5. At floor 6, the door stayed shut, and the boy's face changed completely...

the first note said: "your trash bin is 14 inches too far left. please fix."
it was taped to my front door in tidy handwriting on a pink index card. no name, no number. i figured it was the HOA, so i shoved the bin to the right and forgot about it.
the next tuesday: "now it's 3 inches too far right. i'm not going to keep doing this." then: "the lid is facing the wrong way." then, a week later: "you moved it again. do you do this on purpose?"
i found out the card came from 22 Linden, the house across the street, belonging to a woman i'd never met. i pictured a clipboard and a measuring tape.
on the 9th note, i went over, knocked and prepared a speech about bins and personal freedom.
the door opened. she was holding a white cane.
