Indigenous communities play a vital role in combating biodiversity loss. Their ancestral, customary, and traditional land management practices and knowledge systems offer invaluable insights, curated over generations - yet they're often excluded from international decision-making, project development, and data sovereignty framings. We don’t think that’s always intentional. So we decided to unpack what Indigenous Shareholdership means across environmental markets and how to envision a better version of engagement. We learned so much and realized that others would too - - so we decided to share it in a paper. Our paper covers: 🤔Common models of engagements - and how they are problematic. 💡Ideas for how to make community consultations better ⚠️Traditional ways of ‘partnering’ with IPs - and how they often undermine project outcomes and livelihoods. 🤝Inspiration for more equitable and mutually benefitting business relationships. 🚫Some major pitfalls with the current approach to capacity-building (top-down and tokenistic). 🌍 An invitation to think differently about the knowledge and lived experiences of IPs and how project developers, businesses and international nonprofits can become Allies in our collective effort to recognize and value IPs biocultural perspectives. It might feel uncomfortable to read at times  - but trust us and a number of inspiring Indigenous Leaders and other translators or experts - you will gain valuable insights and a handful of concrete tools you can use going forward.
