All Nobel prize winners deserve our admiration — we at UNHCR wish to congratulate in particular Omar Yaghi, who was awarded the #Nobel prize for chemistry yesterday and who grew up in Jordan in a Palestinian refugee family from Gaza. Respect.

#WorldRefugeeDay comes but once a year, but 120 million refugees around the world need access to health care every day. We thank host countries for their effort to provide care to everyone in need. We thank partners for their collaboration to protect the most vulnerable. Today, and every day, we work for #HealthForAll refugees.

Since the start of the conflict in #Sudan, nearly 2 million people have fled across the borders, becoming refugees. They have pressing health needs. Outbreaks of cholera, dengue, malaria, measles, hepatitis-E, and yellow fever are concerning. @WHO helps with the delivery of essential health services for refugees to save lives. In June, high temperatures have led to heat stroke and dehydration among those fleeing through the desert. The rainy season will bring with it new challenges, including flooding. So far, WHO has allocated $16 million from its Contingency Fund for Emergencies for response to the Sudan crisis, including responding to the health needs of the refugees in Central African Republic, Chad, Ethiopia and South Sudan. This allows health workers on the ground to ensure critical services: from mental health services to safe delivery of babies to quick detection and treatment of cholera cases and more. On #WorldRefugeeDay, I thank all health workers, partners and WHO staff, who bring these life-saving services to refugees who have suffered so much.

"And at least 63 countries are making progress in the delivery of care to refugees and migrants, and tackling the root causes of ill-health. For example, Colombia has enacted policies that have enabled 3.5 million migrants to receive health services"-@DrTedros #WHA77

4 out of every 10 people worldwide live in countries where governments spend more on debt interest payments than on education or health. Money is flowing in the wrong direction — from the countries who need it to the countries who don’t. news.un.org/en/story/2024/04…
