What I hate about the term "NIMBY" is it's not in your backyard. It was never in your backyard. It's in somebody else's backyard. Nobody is building anything in your backyard. That doesn't happen.

If NIMBYs were only objecting to things in their backyard I'd be fine with them! I don't want other people building stuff in my backyard either. It's MY backyard! I paid money for it! I didn't pay for my neighbor's backyard. It belongs to him. He can do what he wants with it.

Barely two months ago, we lost Professor Jason Arday. Thousands grieved. Institutions across higher education spoke about inclusion and belonging. Now Nathan Cofnas is being given a room at Oriel College, Oxford, to ask whether DEI is undermining higher education. 🧵

Whenever people start going on about animal rights like we’re having to hear so much about in DC right now I have an experience I imagine like people have with strident pro-life activism, which is, I have no obligation to entertain your metaphysical beliefs and I don’t find them very interesting.

Good afternoon, especially to Indian Americans with 750+ on the Math SAT and/or strongly productive jobs in the tech sector! Thank you for your contributions to the US, especially as measured by your deservedly high market incomes! 🫡🇺🇸🕉️

NEW: Per federal indictment against her, DOJ has Virginia Senate Pro Tempore Louise Lucas on a phone call telling an unindicted co-conspirator: “This is our last chance at generational wealth…I’ve got too old to not be greedy”.

Hence their result: Because billionaires leave forever, the state of California loses an infinite stream of income tax revenue. But because the dreaded annual wealth tax never materializes, the state gains nothing in revenue (beyond the one-time tax). This is what delivers their net loss of nearly $40 billion.

"the Tribunal determined the open market rent was" ...
This Labour government’s transformative Renters’ Rights Act empowers private renters to challenge unreasonable rent increases. If a tenant believes a proposed rent increase is above the open-market rent, they can refer the matter to the First-tier Tribunal. In a recent case in Manchester where the Landlord proposed an increase in rent from £1,650 per calendar month to £1,700, the Tribunal determined the open market rent was actually £1,450 per calendar month. We’re standing up for renters and our reforms are working. gov.uk/residential-property-…

Last thing you hear before entering another decade of economic stagnation: "GDP is just a monetary valuation."
French Presidential Candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon: Gross domestic product. I dig a hole, GDP goes up. I fill it in, GDP goes up. I get into my car, drive into a wall, GDP goes up because we have to rebuild the wall and repair the car. GDP is just a monetary valuation.

The number of people telling me there are no jobs outside of the new york city metro area is startling.
There are lots of cheap places to live in this country, and it would make sense for people who cannot afford rent in new york city to be displaced to those places.

Honestly though the people whom this most applies to do not have jobs. For instance people who are in subsidized or public housing occupying valuable real estate that could be occupied by productive people should have to move from Navy Yard to PG County.

When we bought this house I thought I would need to swap these windowed cabinet doors out. After all, if you can see into the cabinets, you have to keep them tidy. But in fact that is not true. There is no law, and I can easily see where everything is. Now I love them.

Kitchens are a place where work happens. They are for cooking in, not looking at, and the windowed cabinets rock for being able to find shit.

I do eventually plan on redoing the upper cabinet run, so that they are taller and can hold more stuff (the soffits above them are empty), but I'm going to stick with windowed doors.

Good God, my 45 year old single family home in suburban Virginia cost more than this whole ass apartment building in Brooklyn
These idiots don't realize that rent controlled buildings are already trading at - effectively - the option value of a future mayor rolling back rent control.

1. You should be able to develop social conventions from first principles. 2. I, personally, am unable to deduce our current social conventions from first principles. 3. Therefore I should not follow them.

I've heard a lot of people over the years claim that school is like prison. If true it would massively strengthen the case for strict truancy enforcement in Washington DC.
