Where the City of Nashville "Screwed Up" ( written with the help of AI) In my opinion, it was lack of oversight and greed. You can't tell me that the progressives did not know what they were doing... The goal, the overall goal of the progressive movement is to use government action to address economic inequality, expand the social safety net, and protect civil rights and environmental sustainability. Now from AI 1. Bankrolling a Downtown Bubble (Over-Incentivizing Luxury) For the past decade, Nashville operated heavily on a "boomtown" growth strategy. The city used zoning shifts and fast-tracked approvals to clear the way for dense high-rises and downtown condominiums. • The Flawed Assumption: The prevailing economic theory was that building any housing supply would cool down prices globally. • The Reality: Out-of-state developers and Wall Street investors didn't build affordable starter homes; they built luxury condos, boutique hotels, and short-term Airbnb rentals optimized for maximum profit margins. This created the current "blood bath" for luxury speculators—leaving downtown Nashville with the highest inventory of unsold downtown condos of any major city in the United States. 2. The Reappraisal and Tax Rate Bait-and-Switch In 2025, Davidson County properties underwent a mandatory four-year reassessment, revealing a massive 45% to 46% median spike in property values driven by the pandemic boom. • The Failure: Under Tennessee state law, when property values spike that sharply, the city is legally required to lower the tax rate to a "revenue-neutral" level so it doesn't get a massive tax windfall. • The Council's Move: Instead of keeping the rate neutral to protect residents from inflation, the Metro Council voted 32–6 to override the certified rate and pass a 26% property tax hike to fund a $3.8 billion municipal budget. This meant that even as the housing market began to cool and slow down in 2026, working-class homeowners and landlords faced surging tax bills. 3. Landlords Passing the Buck Because the tax hike increased the cost of owning property, landlords across Davidson County did what they always do: they factored the higher tax bill directly into their tenants' monthly payments. This wiped out any affordability gains that should have come from the broader housing market cooling off. This is where the city brought in Hal Cato to "fix" the affordible housing. Hmmm (more to come...)

A very happy "Heavenly Birthday" to my Dad, the one and only Charles Edward Daniels. It’s hard to believe that today you would have been 90. I seems like almost yesterday that we were celebrating your 80th. Dad, you are missed every day, and I sure wish we had you around for some of your guidance, wisdom and hugs. Happy Birthday, Dad. You are loved and I know one day I'll see you again. - CD Jr.

Everyone is misunderstanding what caramelized onions are. They should be jammy and spreadable, not browned but raw on the inside. In this video I give you the trick to making proper caramelized onions. I think you’ll be shocked by the secret ingredient.

Two ships passing in the night: the Metro Nashville Public Schools budget vs. the number of students in those schools
Enrollment fell from ~87k to ~79k while the operating budget rose from ~$850M to ~$1.4B over the past decade (public sources, approximate).

Rachel Ford phone call was the kind you remember where you were when you got it – I was parking my car on Music Row about to walk into a recording session. Call lasted one minute, when she finished talking I said "Very disappointing" and hung up. That was one year ago today, still remember it vividly. Walked into my session 10 minutes later to a chorus of congratulations from my colleagues, had to tell them all "Thanks but guess what?" and the news went over like a turd in a punch bowl, stunk up the whole session. "You should sue" was the consensus and that's what I did. Such a cowardly move by Rachel Ford. It didn't have to be this way.
This is Rachel Ford, the Knoxville Symphony CEO who denied me the Principal Clarinet job after I won the blind audition unanimously. Rachel, why did you invite me to the audition after reviewing my resume if you had no intention of hiring me? Why have me waste my time?

As the internet debates who qualifies as an American, Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell is gung-ho on handing out table scraps to what he calls "Legacy Businesses" in an attempt to stave off mass restaurant closures as a result of his tax increases. Freddie, of course, is limp-wristed when it comes to confrontation - here he is reported to be considering whether a Legacy Business is one that is in place for 15 years. Maybe 10 years is better? How about 2? In the end, local restaurants decide that the Mayor is only at their meeting for window dressing and decide to act without him. They band together in the Nashville Area Restaurant Alliance to share tips and tricks and to drive costs lower.

"We need 90,000 new homes in ten years." Nashville's officials have said this so many times it stopped sounding like a claim and started sounding like a fact, the same trick that convinced a generation that corn flakes were "part of a complete breakfast." It's not a housing count. It's a population forecast in a housing costume, and I spent a year asking Metro to show me the math. They never did. So I did it myself. Three doors. Two Zonks. One car. Every number is theirs, with pages cited. Come on down. #Nashville #NashvilleHousing

What are the chances that this man, wanted in Nashville for violent felonies since 2021, spent most of his time inside the city limits? Pretty good. And when he steps outside Nashville, he is caught. Nashville police have chosen not to seek out and arrest criminals.
Moments ago, after spotting and confirming a known wanted person, an officer conducted a traffic stop and safely took the man— wanted by Nashville authorities since 2021 for violent crimes —into custody. The 46-year-old Nashville man wanted by Nashville authorities for Felony Aggravated Assault with Strangulation, Bodily Injury and False Imprisonment was apprehended. This man, evading apprehension and justice over for a violent crime for 4 years and 9 months, was apprehended. These results continue to reinforce what our data consistently shows. During the first six months of 2026, Mt. Juliet officers apprehended 342 wanted individuals, with 88% being non-residents of our city. Those numbers tell an important story. Much of the criminal activity our officers encounter originates outside Mt. Juliet. Through proactive policing, high officer visibility, strategic patrol operations, strong investigative work, and responsible use of technology, our team continues to identify threats, apprehend offenders, and ensure criminals are not successful in our community or have any opportunity to harm our community members. Keeping Mt. Juliet one of Tennessee’s safest cities takes a committed team, strong partnerships, and the continued support of a community that values proactive public safety.

The Nations' Wall of Murals is on life support. Tonight, Metro Council votes on an amendment that lets a developer demolish them — no preservation required, no funding, no permit gate. CM Allen asked twice who pays. Nobody answered. The Story by a Nation's mural advocate quoted here: Community-drafted amendment requiring professional preservation of the mural, submitted to the sponsor for consideration without response: 11. The existing mural located on the west façade of the existing structure fronting 60th Ave. N. shall be professionally preserved in place, or professionally removed, relocated, and reinstalled in a publicly viewable location, prior to the issuance of any building permit for development of the site. Prior to the issuance of any building permit for development of the site, a preservation plan shall be developed in consultation with the Mural Preservation Committee, consisting of the 12 original artist(s), or their designated representative(s), the Nations Neighborhood Association, the Metropolitan Arts Commission, and the Council Member for District 20. The preservation plan shall comply with all applicable preservation laws, including the Visual Artists Rights Act. If relocated, the mural shall remain publicly viewable following reinstallation. The cost of preservation, removal, relocation, and reinstallation shall be the responsibility of the developer. What we got: Sponsor-drafted amendment leaving the mural’s fate to the developer, with no enforceable requirement to preserve it, introduced one day before third and final reading: 11. The existing mural on the west façade of the existing structure fronting 60th Ave N. shall be preserved and reused or repurposed within the new development, returned or donated to the artists, or otherwise relocated to another publicly viewable area. There have been 4 major revolutions in the past 250 years: American, French, Russian, and Chinese. Only one led to individual rights and prosperity. The others led to mass death and tyranny. The US revolution was unique because it said two things: 1. Our rights come from God not from the govt. 2. Humans are power -hungry so we need to limit govt power. So the next time someone attacks the nation of one revolution that succeeded and recycles the the idea of those that miserably failed, you can ask them: are you ignorant, or malicious?
