Yesterday, after weeks of escalating crackdowns, Egypt’s govt shut down Mada Masr, one of the country’s leading independent outlets, & convicted its editor-in-chief, Lina Attalah.   They must reverse this decision & stop their assault on press freedoms.   Journalism is not a crime.
Less than a month after arresting the entire Matsadaash newsroom, the Egyptian govt has now filed baseless charges against the editor-in-chief of Mada Masr, continuing their largest crackdown in years.   This assault on the free press must end NOW. Journalism is not a crime.

Some of the sharpest analyses of Israeli politics come from Daniel Levy. This should be subtitled in every language. Short, clear, impeccable.
Daniel Levy | Former Israeli Peace Negotiator | US/Middle East Project (@USMEP): Netanyahu did not alone commit genocide for 3 years. He did not alone maintain decades of illegal occupation. It was system-wide. Eisenkot was part of it & served in the military. He sat in the emergency unity security cabinet after Oct. 7 - during the genocide. Israeli generals, soldiers & judges - all part of a system-wide mobilization. Dissenting voices existed but remained marginal.

“The goal is to erase Gaza.” Journalist Naomi Klein (@NaomiAKlein) tells Ash Sarkar (@AyoCaesar) about the Israeli military’s use of AI in its genocide, which has been highlighted in the new documentary Naza. “It’s not actually based on proof… It's based on prediction,” Klein says. “This is Minority Report stuff.” Watch the full episode of Downstream on our YouTube channel.

Miliband: ‘the UK is sanctioning those linked to these and other atrocities’ in Sudan. Also Miliband: we are considering supporting an apologist for the UAE, which sponsors the perpetrators, to lead the United Nations.
The world cannot ignore what is happening in Sudan. One year on from the mass atrocities in El Fasher, the UK is sanctioning those linked to these and other atrocities, and strengthening support for survivors and communities at risk of famine.

As @antonioguterres arrives in Egypt, Egyptian authorities are preparing to put Egypt's leading independent media outlet @MadaMasr's @Linaattalah on trial and threatening to shutter the outlet. They've also arrested an entire newsroom of six journalists belonging to @matsda2sh.
I've come back to Egypt again & again, because when this region & our world have faced difficult moments, Egypt has consistently been a pillar of multilateralism, working to open space for diplomacy. At at a time when divisions are deepening, it's critical to keep the channels of diplomacy open.

The ugly truth about France and some of the other European countries currently in turmoil - and which none of the politicians want to admit because it'd be political suicide - is that you can't solve the problem by going after immigrants (as the right asserts) or the rich (as the left asserts), but you could solve it by going after the old. One extraordinary statistic for you: people over 60 in France, a quarter of the population, own 60% of France's wealth, non-financial and financial (ofce.fr/pdf/revue/2025/3-192…). And here is another crazy statistic: that same quarter of the population, those above 60, receive nearly two-thirds of all social spending by the French government (previssima.fr/actualite/prot…) - which is famously among the highest in the world (France's government spending is an insane 57.3% of GDP). Last statistic: they make up about 40% of voters because they're a third of registered voters (insee.fr/fr/statistiques/266…), and they turn out far more than anyone else (franceinfo.fr/elections/sond…). Put our 3 statistics together and there's almost a bit of an apartheid situation here: the old own most of the country's wealth, collect most of the social spending and have the political power to keep it that way. Which makes them a de-facto rentier class, living off assets and transfers paid for by younger generations. And, of course, at the risk of stating a truism, the future is built by the young. Yet France keeps effectively taking money away from them to give it to those whose working lives are already behind them - and need the money far less since they already own the country's wealth. What about inheritance, I hear you ask? That's the funniest/saddest aspect: given that life expectancy has kept rising, the French now inherit a home at 54 on average. The most common case is someone in their 80s leaving it to heirs in their 50s, in effect the very old transferring wealth to the about-to-be old (insee.fr/fr/statistiques/fic…). You can add this to our earlier apartheid statement: on top of all the rest, even when the old finally let go of their wealth, it stays within their own "camp". That's my personal situation, incidentally: I'm 42, my father is 71 and he is starting to look at ways to pass things on to me and my siblings, when our professional lives are already well settled, so it'll arrive when it changes things the least, which is pretty much the French system in a nutshell. Now, I get that there'd be some unfairness in going after them: they paid into the system their entire working lives, playing by the rules of a social contract that told them if they paid up they'd collect at the end. Changing the rules now means breaking that promise, which is admittedly unfair. But there's no magic wealth tree in any society: you can only take it where it is. That's the way most major societal transformations end up happening. They're often triggered by a catastrophic event (the so-called "four horsemen": mass-mobilisation war, revolution, state collapse, plague) BUT what really drives change is a transfer: wealth gets pried from the privileged class who've been sitting on it and handed to those who'll build what comes next. So, in theory and in an ideal world, you can do without the catastrophic event and directly proceed with the transfer... The fact that in France, and elsewhere in Europe, it's the youth protesting is probably no coincidence - even though they don't frame it as a generational fight. And even though, cruel irony, the left politicians many of them march behind promise to bring the retirement age back to 60 (lcp.fr/actualites/legislativ…), which would make the situation even worse. Let's say they understand intuitively that the system is stacked against them, even if they haven't yet figured out how. And politicians are obviously doing what politicians do, meaning pandering to the people who actually vote, while pointing the young towards easier - and politically convenient - scapegoats. To be clear I'm not saying it's the only problem in France, VERY far from it. I'm also not saying that all old people in France live a lavish lifestyle at the expense of younger generations: there are also plenty of very poor retirees who, if anything, would deserve more. What I am saying is that it's probably the biggest elephant in the room: everyone can see it, nobody dares mention it - no politician, from any side, wants to run on cutting grandma's pension - and it makes every other problem harder to fix.

Lula vs. Bolsonaro: I was held in solitary confinement for 1,901 days for revealing the truth about the U.S. government's killings and espionage, including against Brazil and its industries. Out of power, Lula fought for my freedom. In power, Lula discussed my persecution with Pope Francis, who decided to meet with my family and offer help. After my release, Lula and I met in Rome to mourn the Holy Father's passing. Lula was kind to my children and asked for nothing in return. In contrast, Jair and Flávio Bolsonaro did nothing and said nothing. Yet without the ability to say no to Washington and Tel Aviv, there can be no domestic policy, only foreign instructions. Those orders are always the same: "Expand our theft of resources and wages, and keep your mouths shut about us murdering children." Sellouts will surrender everything in exchange for a cut, even their own tongues.

"The bombs falling in Gaza are being guided by code written in California. This isn’t a war; it’s a joint venture of genocide.” At DAWN’s 2026 Annual Gala & Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., we honored Ahmed Shihab-Eldin (@aseisfree), an Emmy-nominated journalist, presenting him with the 2026 Jamal Khashoggi Defender of Justice Award, for his courageous journalism, outspoken defense of Palestinian rights, and commitment to speaking truth despite the personal consequences. Throughout his career, Ahmed has challenged mainstream media's failures, exposing how political and corporate interests can shape coverage and silence uncomfortable truths. For him, journalism is not simply about reporting facts, but about using stories to illuminate the human condition and, in his words, “to move society forward.” His reporting and advocacy have been uncompromising, including on Palestine. “Language matters,” he reminds us, challenging the unequal ways Palestinian and Israeli lives are portrayed in the media. He insists that genuine peace requires equality, accountability, Palestinian self-determination, and an end to occupation. In March 2026, Ahmed was arrested in Kuwait, where he was visiting family, after sharing a news clip about events there. His 52-day detention and Kuwait’s revocation of his citizenship underscore the personal cost journalists can face for exercising their right to speak freely. Yet his message remains one of courage, solidarity, and hope: “Do not underestimate the power of connecting with other human beings and drawing strength from there,” he says. “Because that is how change happens historically: political change, social change for any community.” Watch this video tribute honoring Ahmed’s courage, principled journalism, and unwavering commitment to justice. We’ll continue sharing highlights from DAWN’s gala soon. Stay tuned.

Johannes bought a second Ledger from a different Mediamarkt today. And it has the same spy implants inside. I don't think he's engagement farming as this would backfire immediately. The scale of this seems to be insane. Like absolutely nuts.
UPDATE: I can confirm that the Ledger supply chain is compromised in Europe as well. @Ledger should initiate an immediate product recall to protect users. I just purchased a second device from a different Mediamarkt location today, recorded the unboxing process, and discovered spyware once again (video linked in the second tweet). The device was compromised in the exact same manner, featuring identical modifications (such as additional cables and an LTE module). This indicates its a widespread issue rather than an isolated incident, potentially affecting Ledger inventory across MediaMarkt and Saturn stores throughout Europe (comprising over 1,000 stores across 11 countries). My initial hypothesis was that these devices were returns that looked unopened to the employees and were just sold again as new however, a MediaMarkt employee confirmed that the device I purchased was not a return, and that returned Ledgers are sent directly back to the manufacturer rather than resold. Store records show the inventory originated from Aqipa GmbH. While Ledger's CTO was unsure if Aqipa serves as the direct distributor between Ledger and MediaMarkt, it appears to be the case. Given that Aqipa distributes across Europe, any physical retail store receiving stock through them may be at risk. I sent the first ledger to mark and the second one is going to ledger now, so that they can analyse it. If you purchased a ledger from anyone other than the official ledger store, make sure to check your device!!

Israeli Finance Minister Smotrich just said the quiet part out loud. He called the operation in southern Lebanon an “unprecedented thorough cleansing,” said the people there have nowhere to return to, and bragged that the world isn’t stopping them. That’s not a denial. That’s an admission. Every claim that “ethnic cleansing isn’t happening” just got debunked by one of their own ministers—on camera, proudly.

The Israeli government is refusing to let hundreds of children’s wheelchairs into Gaza. The 900 wheelchairs, donated by two Australian charities, remain locked in a warehouse in Jordan, having been sent off more than a year ago. Shipments from Kids on Wheels Alliance and Wheelchairs for Kids arrived in Jordan in February and October last year. Australian news channel ABC reported that Australian officials raised the issue of the wheelchairs being blocked multiple times with the Israeli government but received no response. Shaoquett Moselmane, chair of the Kids on Wheels Alliance, told the New Arab that the charity had received no warning of security concerns about the shipment from Israeli authorities. “There could be no legitimate reason to hold up wheelchairs for children with special needs,” he said. “No reason of any nature given as they are just wheelchairs for the thousands of amputee children and the thousands more in need of support.” Even before the start of the genocide in Gaza, restrictions on imports into the Strip made life difficult for disabled Palestinians. Since 2023, a UN committee estimated that 21,000 children have been left disabled because of “excessive use of force by Israeli forces”, while over 40,000 have sustained “war related injuries”. The head of UNRWA – the UN agency for Palestinian refugees – stated last year that Gaza had become “home to the highest number of child amputees per capita worldwide”. Humanitarian agencies have warned of shortages of basic medical supplies in Gaza, with groups stating that the Israeli government has deliberately restricted shipments of aid into the Strip. Abdullah Al-Balawi, a doctor with the Palestinian Australian New Zealand Medical Association, told ABC that he “felt great pain” seeing the wheelchairs piled up in warehouses. "We want to deliver a message to the world," he said. "What is the impediment to the entrance of these wheelchairs into Gaza and reaching the children? The humanitarian aid must not stop. This is part of the stubbornness of the other side by not letting in this aid, the wheelchairs being only a part of it."

If you had any doubt that Netanyahu had been warned firmly and repeatedly about October 7, most specifically from MBZ, and refused to give the warning to Israeli security organizations, the NYT has now confirmed it with new facts: 1) Two sources on the call itself, one who spoke with MBZ directly. "A person who said they had spoken with Sheikh Mohammed and another person who said they had been briefed by someone on the call between the two leaders told The New York Times that the Emirati leader had secretly reported to Mr. Netanyahu that Hamas was considering a major attack." 2) MBZ told the CIA director about the call. "Sheikh Mohammed mentioned his September 2023 phone call with Mr. Netanyahu months later in a discussion with William Burns, the C.I.A. director at the time," telling Burns "he had spoken to Mr. Netanyahu about a looming threat of violence in the West Bank or the Gaza Strip carried out by Hamas." 3) Minutes of the Oct. 1, 2023 security meeting show he never raised it. Netanyahu "gathered his security chiefs days later, on Oct. 1, 2023... and never mentioned the warning, according to minutes of the meeting reviewed by The Times." Instead "he pushed back when some security officials said that Israel should consider military strikes against senior Hamas leaders in Gaza," arguing "any Israeli action in Gaza might sabotage the prospect of Saudi Arabia establishing diplomatic relations with Israel." 4) There is evidence of an intentional coverup. The call is missing from every internal probe. It is "not mentioned in any of the internal investigations conducted by the military, intelligence agencies or other entities," according to "five former senior Israeli officials" who "were involved in the assessments." The evidence is clear. Netanyahu was warned of an attack days before it occurred. He understood the severity of the warning and yet decided to hide it from his security officials. After the attack, he made efforts to cover up this warning. All this raises questions: why did Netanyahu ignore the warnings?
