An anthropologist recently told me that the places and people that used to send the rank and file to the British army "no longer seemed to exist." For @dispatch__media I went to look for them...
Once upon a time, Sunderland sent hundreds of young men into the Army.
Last year, it sent just 10.
What's behind Britain's recruitment crisis?

Walking through Ashford during last night's storm, I saw the lights of St Mary the Virgin on and assumed it was Evensong. Upon closer inspection inside, I found the town's burghers trying to dance to Underworld's "Born Slippy"

Late to reading this v droll piece and just embarrassed myself by LOLing on the train in front of a crowd of boozing West Ham fans
I spent a week relying on just the BBC to educate, inform and entertain me and jotted down some thoughts and emotions for @TheCriticMag
There's a pub in this village that has been going since 1690. Didn't survive Starmergeddon, which in terms of Kent folk notoriety here is now on a par with the Battle of Britain and gypsies
Rewatching Neil Oliver, who at his peak was better than Kenneth Clarke, Simon Schama etc. A new BBC2 series of something like Walking with The Beaker People with the occasional indulgence of his New World Order paranoia would be harmless and a bit of fun

For those mocking the Prime Minister for going on Gogglebox, it's for Stand Up to Cancer! A very worthy cause indeed, as it happens!"

Look at this selection of Mini Gems @andyburnham @10DowningStreet just four blacks and two reds in a packet. Time after time they’re padded out with yellows, which no one wants to eat.
When are you going to take action so we get a fair chewy confectionery deal?

Is the Pleasure enjoyed by an Algerian teenager firebombing a car greater than the Pleasure enjoyed by Colin Brazier imagining Kenneth Clark's ghost wandering the streets of Paris this week & shaking his head? In either case, the sum total of Pleasure Had is obscene.

For @UnHerd, I wrote about Britain's teddy-bear obsession, AA Milne, and the 100th anniversary of Winnie the Pooh. 👇👇👇
The Pooh stories were an exercise in adult interference from the very start. Milne pillaged his son Christopher Robin’s imagination and his stock of cuddly toys, only to impose an entirely new meaning onto them — an official and inflexibly grown-up interpretation of what childhood is really about.
And this accounts, in part, for Milne’s success. This was how adults wanted childhood to be, how they misremembered it: comfortable and stable, with no horrors lurking out there in the dark. Pooh lulled his adult readers “bump, bump, bump, on the back of the head” into the silly innocence of the Edwardian summer. The Hundred Acre Wood, after all, is a place where the trees haven’t been blasted bare by artillery fire, and the word “Somme” could only be countenanced as a plausibly Poohvian misspelling (“I want Somme hunny”).

A punchy "turn your phone down please." A forthright manner (with the hint of violence should things escalate)
Normally, I don't deal with noise nuisance on public transport like this out of fear. But I did make an exception for a confused elderly white woman in her 80s

'A coil?' I said. 'Size of it you could've had carpets fitted never mind a fucking coil."
"The mother-in-law has been coming round to our house for Christmas ever since the wife and I got married. This year we're going to have a change. We're going to let her in."

I wrote about 25 years of David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive here, and what it tells us about interpreting art, the human imagination and the creative work ethic.
