Just so we all know….
Even if the Allegheny County Council referendum fails — and I hope it does — these are the council members who publicly advocated for it.
As we all struggle, they want to give themselves more on our taxpayer dime.
Totally gluttony.
Absurd behavior.
On a day like today. People really need to understand this and how important local elections are and who you’re actually voting for. While this isn’t an elected office it still ties into the type of people who get elected and then appoint those who make these types of decisions. This didn’t have to happen.
This is Alina Sheykhet. She was 20 years old.
Matthew Darby was brought into the Allegheny County Jail on a criminal trespass charge after breaking into her apartment.
He refused to cooperate with my coworker. Cocky. Arrogant. Defiant.
I saw he had a pending rape case out of another county. I couldn’t see the victim’s name. I needed to know if it was the same woman.
I called Allegheny County 911. They transferred me to Indiana County 911. A sergeant from the department that arrested him for the rape called me back.
He was in his cruiser and told me he didn’t have the information with him. He said he would turn around, go back to the station, pull the file, and call me right back.
And he did.
When he called back, he asked for the name of my victim.
I told him Alina Sheykhet.
“Different girl,” he said.
Then he added, “He really gets around.”
I told him I knew that — and that I was going to try to stop it.
I called my supervisor. She was also the manager responsible for the jail population numbers.
Let me explain why that matters.
We worked for the criminal courts. We did not run the Allegheny County Jail. Managing the jail population should have been the responsibility of county jail leadership, not someone in the very Pretrial Services office receiving grant money to reduce that population.
The same office pushing to release defendants was responsible for tracking the numbers used to measure the success of those efforts.
That is a glaring conflict of interest. And to me, it screams corruption.
I told my supervisor everything. Pending rape case. Refusing to cooperate. No idea where he would go if released.
I told her he doesn’t like women telling him no.
I asked for an override. I did not want this man released on a non-monetary bond.
She declined it.
I documented the declined override that night. I still have the screenshot.
I also told my coworkers out loud:
He will kill her if he gets out.
Thirteen days later, my coworker messaged me a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette story.
Police were looking for the ex-boyfriend of a slain Pitt student.
It was Alina.
He had gone back to her apartment and beaten her to death.
Her father found her.
I said he would kill her.
I warned them. I asked them not to release him. I documented the warning.
We released him anyway.
The money was more important.
Alina Sheykhet was just starting her life.
We helped facilitate Matthew Darby ending it.

Fellow Democrats in Michigan: I urge you not to vote for Abdul El-Sayed.
If we fail to draw a line against anti-American bigotry and hate, this cancer within our party will continue to metastasize.
We can win a Senate majority by supporting the many excellent, patriotic Democratic candidates across the country who share our values. But supporting a toxic candidate who betrays those values would put our party on a path toward its own destruction.
Look at the Green Party of England and Wales and Berlin’s Left Party to see the danger of inviting dangerous extremists into a party in the hope of integrating them into a big tent. I spoke with Haley Stevens yesterday.
Feeling a bit absurd in pointing out the obvious and being far kinder than I should have been, I reminded her that the outcome of this senate race will be viewed in the light of a future Supreme Court vacancy, and I expressed a hope that all of us understand the stakes.
She assured me she's supporting Dr. El-Sayed, sent me a video of a recent speech she gave blasting Mike Rogers and said this: "Still stands. I promise."
She also said she's been sending this video to other folks to make it clear where she stands on this race.
Again: that was yesterday.
I have known Haley Stevens for years. I have counted her as a friend and an ally. We've had many thoughtful conversations about this country, and she has never failed to remind me that her mother is a fan of my writing.
Whatever other political differences we have, she has always made it clear to me she would stand with LGBTQ people. It was a red line she refused to cross.
Instead, she has made the inexplicable decision to endorse a man who views LGBTQ Americans as second-class citizens unworthy of full equality.
I can't help but wonder what her mother must be thinking right now.
I have no idea what has happened to the person I thought I knew, but clearly, she has completely taken leave of her senses in endorsing a Republican who is little more than a Trump sycophant -- less than 24 hours after promising me that she has not wavered from the bigger picture.
I am disgusted with her cynicism and cowardice in this moment. God forgive me for trusting her.
If you're a Michigan voter and as disgusted as I am, get to your polling place and vote for Dr. El-Sayed.

Just four years ago, when he was running for governor, he promised a $250 gas tax rebate if elected, because gas prices were too high.
Well, he won, and Pennsylvanians were lied to. No checks. No changes to the gas tax. Nothing. ❌
We have the third highest gas tax in the country and he refuses to do anything about it. On top of that, he lied about giving $250 to every Pennsylvanian with a car, just to win an election.

Haley Stevens was going to do a Democratic unity rally with Abdul El-Sayed and James Clyburn where she was going to encourage her supporters, many of whom have serious reservations about El-Sayed, to vote for him.
This was very important for El-Sayed, because Stevens is popular among Jewish and black Michigan Democrats and Clyburn is an icon among black voters nationwide. El-Sayed has weakness with both of these groups and needs to shore them up going into election day.
Stevens's condition was that he make an unambiguous, unqualified condemnation of the antisemitic rhetoric his friends, supporters and surrogates have been using, including in ads run in Michigan.
El-Sayed refused to do this, and instead asked Stevens not to appear at the event. At that point, Stevens realized that he was not interested in unity with her or her supporters and that she could no longer support him for Senate.
El-Sayed is an antisemite. He is friends with antisemites Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur. He will not condemn them. He will not condemn the awful things they say.
He has had multiple opportunities to condemn their hateful rhetoric, and he always says: "He is not part of a campaign, nobody speaks for me but me, and I'm not here to talk about that."
That's not good enough. If that is how a Republican talked about Nick Fuentes or Richard Spencer, it would be the biggest controversy in the race. The fact that so many Democrats are willing to tolerate this from Abdul El-Sayed is an indictment of the entire party.
There is no coalition that can include both the Jewish Democratic members of Temple Israel and supporters of the Hezbollah terrorist who tried to murder their preschool children. Abdul El-Sayed made a decision about who he wanted in his tent.
Haley Stevens was late to realize it, but it is admirable that she finally decided to be an upstander instead of a bystander. No Nazis in the US Senate.

I know @HaleyforMI way better than most people on X. She and I came into Congress together in 2018. She was co-Prez of our freshman class. She was incredibly kind to me when my late partner died; she organized a big group of our class to come to the House floor to support me when I spoke about his suicide. We were roommates in 2023, after my wonderful first roomie lost her election; both my adult kids know Haley well and are on a texting basis with her. We’ve socialized and we have good friends in common. While she and I differ on one impt issue, specifically Israel and AIPAC support, I’ve never publicly challenged her on those things, because I felt that her good points outweighed the issues I disagreed with her on. Today, that changes. 👇
Haley’s endorsement of Rogers in the MI senate race is appalling. Not because he’s a Republican, but because what he stands for is what she, and I, and our caucus has fought so hard against. Rogers is a 100% anti-choice politician. He is a Trump loyalist. He’s shown his Islamophobia in his many remarks against @AbdulElSayed, and with this endorsement, Haley has shown that she agrees with his positions. I’m shocked by Haley’s endorsement. I’m terribly sad and disappointed. I’m furious and will be more so if we lose the MI senate race. So many people in the Democratic Party have shown so much support to Haley over the years, and she has betrayed them all. If this is because of her new relationship (about which many of us were so happy for her after she lost the primary), all I can say is that any woman who abandons her friends when a new guy comes along is no friend at all. The fallout for Haley won’t just be in Dem politics; she will be a pariah among her friends in the Democratic caucus in Congress. Only she will be able to decide whether it was worth it.

Il presidente Nawrocki ha fatto rapidamente inversione con il suo aereo ed è tornato in Polonia. Sapeva perfettamente come stessero le cose e in cosa consisteva questo ‘colpo di stato’. Si è immediatamente recato al Tribunale Costituzionale e – in compagnia del Primo Presidente della Corte Suprema – è entrato all’interno.
Il presidente polacco ha contestato lo status dei giudici che il primo ministro aveva appena cercato di introdurre illegalmente nel collegio giudicante per prendere il controllo delle corti.
Ed ecco l’elemento più sorprendente, un altro motivo per cui è possibile che Trump possa aver avuto un ruolo dietro le quinte: le unità di polizia che avevano occupato l’edificio del Tribunale Costituzionale non hanno cercato di impedire al presidente di entrare; in pratica non hanno fatto nulla, mentre i polacchi si radunavano per protestare contro questo ‘colpo di stato’. Invece di una escalation, il tentativo di ‘colpo di stato’ si è dissolto nell'aria.
Perché? Il piano dell’UE è stato sventato dietro le quinte?
Il coinvolgimento della polizia è stato minimo e l’esercito non ha collaborato affatto. È grazie a Trump se l’esercito è rimasto inattivo? O forse l’esercito era in attesa, in stato di allerta, nel caso in cui il tentativo di ‘colpo di stato’ si fosse trasformato in una vera e propria ‘rivoluzione colorata’?
Sembrava che il primo ministro contasse su un forte supporto per poi vedersi improvvisamente il terreno crollargli sotto i piedi.
Il tentativo di ‘colpo di stato’, oltre che maldestro, si è rivoltato contro la stessa UE, indebolendola ulteriormente.
L’Unione Europea – come il Partito Democratico USA – sta lentamente ma inesorabilmente dirigendosi verso il collasso.»
