I’m confused. Why would anyone wish to introduce discrimination between how we treat students from different, friendly international countries - an Austrian versus an Australian for example? And when the government says it cannot afford to offer lower interest rates to British student loan holders, why would subsidising the UK study of EU Commissioners’ children be a priority?
A young European who wants to take a full degree here now pays international fees, often three or four times what a British student pays. Unsurprisingly, many have stopped coming. I support the Government's willingness to offer EU students discounted fees at the summit on 20 November, on two conditions: the cost must be met by the Treasury, not by our universities and colleges, and British students should be treated fairly in return. European students who study here go home as lifelong friends of Britain. We should want them back.

“Under socialism, we’ll all own the factory.” Great. Can I sell my share? “No.” Can I choose different management? “Also no.” Wow, ‘owning the means of production’ sounds so liberating.

Even small local bakeries that never trade with the EU will have to follow EU rules on ingredients, packaging, and nutritional information. Industry compliance costs are estimated at £2 to £3 billion. They will also face additional compliance costs every time the EU changes its rules. UK taxpayers will also have to pay the EU for its policy work to create and enforce these rules on UK firms. This could be up to £3 billion a year, every year.

The hype around the proposed UK-EU "SPS" (sanitary and phytosanitary) agreement is getting ever more ridiculous... 🙄🧵 1⃣ As @CeeMacBee has pointed out, the UK’s entire food and live animal exports to the EU were only worth £12 billion in 2025 (and that was a record high), or just 1.3% of total UK exports... Fascism and communism are not opposites. They are variants of the same thing: the concentration of economic control in the hands of the state.

People might not trust the Times to say this, but even Reform UK admitted that skilled workers are net contributors. It's basic maths really, the answer is in the definition: SKILLED workers. Which of course doesn't include a lot of the immigrants that come to the UK. Obviously SKILLED workers will have high salaries and be net contributors, duh. reformparty.uk/the-cost-of-t…

Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

Lots of vital decisions kicked into long grass. Best that can be said for budget is that markets are calm & it was less damaging to growth than last two. But OBR projections truly horrible - borrowing, debt, inflation & unemployment all up with living standards & growth both down. Govt will regret trumpeting this year’s healthier than expected growth numbers.

Italy and Spain demand solidarity whenever their debt blows up. But they show no solidarity when Ukraine gets invaded and freeride on Germany and others to pay. I think they misunderstand the word solidarity. What they do is grifting. That's different... robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/…

France spends 14% of GDP on pensions, and Le Pen won't commit to reforming them because older voters are core Le Pen supporters. Sure, she might win the election. But will she fix the country? No. Not unless she betrays her supporters.

Turning Point UK outside King’s College London today — trying to debate with students but being drowned out by the socialists with a megaphone screaming that they are not welcome. A petty example of rejecting debate and open dialogue in favour of disruption.

France is in flames (yet he wants to rejoin the EU). Trump is selling out Ukraine, cosying up to Putin again A cost-of-living crunch is looming this winter, especially fuel bills. He still hasn’t told us how or when defence spending will reach 3% GDP. Inflation is rising once more, as are interest rates. Russian forces are threatening our infrastructure, especially undersea data and energy links. The Strait of Hormuz remains closed, our Gulf allies are under attack. And PM Burnham drivels about this!! It’s like the opening sketch from Saturday Night Live.
TikTok star Andy Burnham is back on TikTok displaying all his talents as an overblown local councillor, addressing the serious situation in Europe and how to stop the boats. Only kidding. He's talking about how to be good boys and girls on public transport. On TikTok 🤓👍

Perhaps France ought to contemplate joining the EU. I've heard it controls immigration, bringing peace and prosperity to all its disciples.

One to watch. 😁 76-year-old Timothy Miller appeared in Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court today in a full burka, pleading not guilty to concealing his identity at an anti-migrant protest. He’d previously told officers he was converting to Islam and gender-fluid. In court he argued a religious exemption for “studying Islam” and understanding it “from this side of the veil”. If the court doesn’t accept those self-identification claims as a valid reason to keep the face covering, it will matter for others who assert they are female in order to access exemptions, spaces or rules that depend on that claim. Trial set for February. Only in Britain.. 😂 📸 Andrew Matthews @AndyMatthews_PA / PA Media bbc.com/news/articles/cqx28j…
