Good questions. Our dissatisfaction is far more than how she has handled the referendum file.
Her election campaign, especially the “Alberta Sovereignty Act”she promised, was based on the Free Alberta Strategy document, co-authored by her current chief of staff, Rob Anderson.
Once elected she gave us the Sovereign Alberta within a united Canada Act, which has given us currently approximately 12 to 14 active and proposed legal challenges and judicial reviews against the federal government. None of the other items that “must be implemented” were implemented. We were sold a bill of goods.

At that event she told the APP that if there was dissatisfaction with Ottawa, then the APP together with the people needed to be the “or else” using the Citizen Initiative Act, as she, not surprisingly, had “no or else” in mind.
However, she lied as there was to be no “or else”, now more understandable given her commitment to a “Loyalty to a united Canada”, a ‘founding principle’ that she lied was adopted at the Founding General Meeting in 2018.
The ‘Or Else’ Scam
It’s important for the independence crowd to understand that they were deceived by Danielle Smith right from the outset in that despite all their hopes, the fix was in right from the start with respect to getting a referendum on independence.
Thus, nearly four years ago in October 2022, during a UCP leadership event, Ezra Levant with Rebel News pointedly asked Danielle Smith what her “or else” would be in response to eventual dissatisfaction with Ottawa. Smith replied that she herself had no such “or else” in mind, that is, would not be initiated by her, but rather, such an “or else” would have to rest with the “people” through using the Citizen Initiative Act. To be understood, just go out there and try to collect the necessary number of signatures. That Act had been brought in by Kenney in 2021 to put “more power in the hands of ordinary Albertans…giving Albertans the ultimate say on big issues”.
So, in July 2025 the Alberta Prosperity Project’s Mitch Sylvestre stepped up only to find his first attempted petition effort stopped in its tracks and ending up in court to be quashed by Justice Feasby in December 2025. So, why did it end up in the court after the people being directed by Smith to use the Act? Surprisingly, to date, not one independence person that I have asked that question knew why.
The reason was that while the Bill 54 amendments to the Act had lowered the signature threshold to 177,000 signatures, making a petition exercise even possible, the Smith government, at the same time, left clause 2(4) (stating that an initiative petition proposal must not contravene sections 1 to 35.1 of the Constitution Act) in the Act, which functioned as a filter or screen precluding a referendum on independence. As observed by @PardyBruce with that clause in the Act, an independence referendum was “verboten” and Smith and her Minister of Justice, Mickey Amery, knew that full well. Noteworthy, that a constitutional referendum on equalization payments was able to be held in October 2021, since being enshrined in section 36(2) of the Constitution, it fell outside the restricted window.
Thus, while Smith had said that the Citizen Initiative Act was to “give the people…the power to be the ‘or else’”, the reality is that she had no intention of allowing the people to have such a “power”.
And, similarly, with the recent court setback, despite clause 2(4) having been removed from the Act by Bill 14 amendments in December 2025, with the second petition attempt by Mitch Sylvestre after a successful signature collection campaign, Danielle Smith refused to use section 1 of the Referendum Act to give the people what they had worked so hard for, claiming that she was ‘boxed in’ by the court ruling and had no other choice.
It should be clear by now that the promise that the people could be the “or else” by exercising their voice through the Citizen Initiative Act, was, in fact, never to be. In fact, there was to be no such “or else”, as Smith had explained in 2022 that she had no such option in mind, and, rather, has shown that she is determined that Alberta should remain shackled to globalist Carney’s Canada.

“Alberta Sovereignty Act” bait and switched to “Sovereignty Act Within a United Canada” that no one voted for.
It was a clear fraud.

SMITH MELT DOWN ALERT 🚨
Watch Smith’s crazy Kamala Harris cackle when she is asked about her being elected leader of the UCP by the independence movement.
It is a fact that she had courted support from members of WEXIT, WIPA, and APP.
Smith openly campaigned for APP Support at an APP hosted Leaders Debate. It’s public record.

"in both my candidacy for, and if elected to, the provincial UCP Board of Directors, I recognize, respect, and will abide by the majority decision made by Albertans on Question #10 of the 26/10/19 Referendum."
In other words :
I solemnly swear I will be bound by the the non binding opinion poll held on October 19th. 2026…
This is NOT in keeping with the the Constitution and Bylaws of the UCP.

Half of my family has been in Canada for generations… the other half has been here since the very beginning.
I reject joining the failed EU in any capacity. Our soldiers are rolling over in their graves over this.
Fact: Canada has free trade with the EU—signed in 2017.
Fact: Canada has defended and security pacts and agreements with the EU.
Fact: Joining the EU in any capacity is a useless waste of time that does not serve Canadian citizens. It serves solely as a justification for more carbon tax mandates (through CBAM), to sell off Canadas natural resources instead of use them for our benefit to highest buyer.
For the reasons listed above and many more, the fact that Mark Carney is more concerned with doing something for Europe, to save the disaster that is the EU for his globalist friends… and to secure his next job (which will not be in Canada) than he is with doing something for Canadians is an absolute disgrace.

Some days, it feels like the world is determined to keep us angry, afraid and overwhelmed.
Every issue becomes a battle. Every disagreement becomes a reason to attack someone. And somewhere in all that noise, we lose sight of what we actually want: a peaceful life, meaningful work, a future for our families and public institutions we can trust.
I refuse to accept that constant chaos is the best we can do.
We should be able to question decisions, challenge those in power and disagree with one another without being treated as enemies. These are basic expectations in a free and open society. Why are we having to keep defending them?
We cannot control everything happening in the world. But we can take responsibility for our choices, our health and how we treat others. We can challenge decisions and expect answers from those in power. We do not have to spend every waking hour absorbing the chaos.
For me, part of the answer is stepping away from the noise to think clearly, look for solutions and become more educated. Understanding our rights, how our institutions work and how to hold those in power accountable helps us make informed decisions and stand up for ourselves.
Don’t give in to the chaos and the fear. Keep learning. Keep asking questions. We have a role in shaping what comes next.

Another clip from Smith's weekend interview with the CBC. She was asked if he can keep her leadership and win an election without the support of separatists in her party?
[Awkward laugh]
"Well, that's not who was supporting me.
The people who were supporting me were the ones who were really concerned about the COVID response. The people who were supporting me were the ones who were concerned about some of the DEI ideology that was in classrooms. They were the ones who were concerned about young children being transgender … behind their parents’ backs. Those are the people who voted for me.
This new movement is actually brand new. I mean, some of the leaders of it just woke up one day in April of last year and decided to join the separatist movement."
Sorry Danielle, but the people who pushed for separation are exactly the same people who were against COVID mandates, DEI policies, and the trampling of our rights.
520,000 people voted for option 2 in the referendum. It's fair to say that most of them were conservatives. That's almost 60% of the votes her party got in the 2023 elections.

ALBERTA MEDIA ALERT 🚨
What none of the Media are understanding is how involved Danielle Smith was behind the scenes in manipulating the petition and referendum process.
Prior to the November 2025 AGM Danielle Smith Would text Jeff Rath on a relatively regular basis.
On June 30, 2025 Smith sent a text to Jeff Rath by mistake that was obviously meant for Thomas Lukaszuk.
The text said
“Told you not to submit until the new rules came in. This has to be conducted under the old thresholds”
This text was sent AFTER Lukaszuk had submitted his petition under the old rules and Lukaszuk was already Lobbying to have his petition be permitted to meet the lower signature threshold under the new rules.
Rath responded to Smith by saying that Smith had obviously intended that text for Thomas Lukaszuk.
Smith, obviously flustered tried to lie her way out of it claiming :
“No I meant to send it to you. I told you and Mitch to wait until the new rules came in and it sounds like you did”
The problem with that explanation is that Smith never told Rath anything about waiting until the new rules came in. We were doing it in any event.
The obvious context of this text and the timing of it that Smith was colluding with Lukaszuk to rig the petition process and subsequent referendum against her base in favour of the Forever Canadians.
Of course if what Smith was saying about NOT accidentally sending a text meant for Lukaszuk to Rath (which is less likely) this gives support to what people were saying at the time about Smith being a secret separatist. (which looks even less likely)
The simple fact is that on either formulation - manipulative secret federalist or manipulative secret separatist, SMITH is unelectable.
Understanding who she is as a person, who in their right mind would ever vote for her ever again, on either side of this debate.

Not so fast.
Section 10.1 of the Alberta Human Rights Act allows for preferential hiring based on race, etc. Bill 33 does not repeal Section 10.1. Instead, the Bill adds a bunch of weasily prohibitions and exceptions for provincial bodies.
If they meant it, they could just repeal section 10.1. And they should have invoked the Notwithstanding Clause (section 33) of the Charter. They haven't, so provincial bodies in Alberta will still be subject to section 15(1) and (2) of the Charter, which allow (and sometimes may require) reverse discrimination.
‼️NUKES FIRED!! --- Alberta just tabled Bill 33 and it NUKES DEI and wokism across the public sector.
The Justice Statutes Amendment Act, 2026 (No. 2) bans preferential hiring and promotion based on race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or other “personal characteristics”
in government agencies, schools, universities, municipalities, and Crown entities.
Banned outright:
Ameliorative (DEI) hiring and promotion programs
Mandatory training on DEI, unconscious bias, or cultural competency
Any required training that dictates political, historical, or social opinions or pushes identity-based moral superiority and preferential treatment
Merit is back. Ideological loyalty tests are out.

Smith is making a huge mistake, or is she? Perhaps it’s intentional? Carney & her are very cozy! Maybe she is internationally opening the door for a UCP loss?
Smith is supposed to take her direction as leader of the UCP from the members of the party. She does not get to dictate a person’s conscience. The UCP is not a Federalist party, it is a Conservative Party! For Smith to state there is no room for Independence minded candidates is a huge violation of freedom of speech & democratic principle. Constituents are supposed to elect their representatives, not the executive, or worse the Premier.

This is absolutely true. Every Canadian should be watching our SCC challenge with wide open eyes.
If the government can step into your life, despite doing nothing to deserve it, and confiscate your property (by force), we’re all in big, big trouble. 🇨🇦
This is why I side with the CCFR. I'm not a gun owner but I support their cause strictly from a property rights perspective.
The suggestion by @gary_srp that the guns are to be "returned" implies that they belong to the gov't.
And if they can do that for guns, they can do that for anything.
