Someone sent me an email saying that there’s currently a nice live stream to watch. I didn’t want to keep this from you all because it’s just too cute. See the link. Two ordinary miracles: 1) Pope arranging the 🪑 for ⛪️ 2) Surgeon acknowledging the whole team, from anesthesiology partner to nurses to radiology techs #teamwork 🙏
Love this anecdote from the surgeon that operated on Pope Leo XIV: "On the second day after the operation, we turned around and found him arranging the chairs in the chapel himself. We said, “Holy Father, we can do that.” And he replied, “It doesn’t matter. I can do it, so I will.” What can I say? He really was an absolutely ideal patient."

“And on postoperative day 3, the patient led Mass …” 🙏
Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at noon on Friday in the room set up on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, according to the Holy See Press Office. Several members of Gemelli's medical and nursing staff attended the Mass, along with members of the Vatican City State Gendarmerie Corps. "In his homily, the Pope thanked all the staff—doctors, nurses, and orderlies—for the work they do every day caring for patients in their frailty, and especially for what they have done and continue to do for him," read the statement.

There’s another way: You fill your staff with people that actually want this kind of work (and we do exist) and then you let the region bring it on. Then your problem becomes: not how to prevent it, but how to make the whole thing viable in the long term.
Who else works in a system where you’ve become the regional dumping ground for everything? Complicated surgeries, weekend disasters, surgical complications, biopsies and every procedure smaller facilities supposedly can’t do or simply don’t want to do. We’re essentially the pop off valve for the entire region. In radiology that includes MSK ultrasound, lung biopsies, MRI patients with pacemakers and anything else that’s difficult, time consuming or unprofitable. And yes I’m talking to you smaller hospitals that cherry pick your work and private equity radiology groups that read outpatient imaging nonstop while dumping the difficult work on full service radiology groups. And we all know how it works. Your hospital system benefits from these patients and collects the downstream revenue and technical fees while radiology does the grunt work. Meanwhile the outpatient MRI group down the street cherry picks profitable studies right under your nose and laughs at you on Saturday afternoon while you’re taking call and they’re calling you a sucker. This has been going on for decades. I’m sure many know the drill. I’d love to hear how others have successfully pushed back against this and stopped being the default destination for everyone else’s unwanted work.

This is great data from @JMaxCutsNETs ! 📣 NETLM deserve a different approach from other metastatic liver metastasis. R0 resection in this setting is a myth
Goal of NET LM surgery isn't R0 - it's parenchyma sparing Data from @JMaxCutsNETs Shift in approach 1998–2023 ⬇️Major hepatectomy 60%➡️33% ⏳Better OS with parenchyma-sparing - 67% 10-yr ❌No major hepatectomy for NETs Save parenchyma! tinyurl.com/eu3eawdt

We are no longer just training surgeons to operate robotic systems. We are beginning to prepare them to work alongside intelligent ones. Kristy Hawley writes about what robotic surgery education needs to become, and why academic surgeons should be shaping that transition, not reacting to it. A timely and thought-provoking read on The Academic Surgeon. Read the full post: aasurg.org/the-future-of-rob…
