its true, Anthropic really vibecoded their entire backend to Rust and none of you noticed
Anthropic rewrote its Messages API in Rust. Zero Rust devs on the team. Claude wrote the code. Humans wrote the plan and checked old vs new matched on real traffic. CPU dropped 40-50%. Pretty sure "never do the big rewrite" is dead advice. @katelyn_lesse on @latentspacepod

Facts you can't ignore!
Where will Young India live? By 2035, India will need nearly 10 million new student beds, requiring over $150 billion in investment. Yet barely 1 in 10 students lives in organised hostels. This is a critical challenge that demands urgent attention. This important and often overlooked issue was brought into sharp focus by the outstanding research of Atharv Gupta, a brilliant young student at American School Bombay and ex-NITI Aayog intern, whose research formed the foundation of our article. We make the case for unlocking idle public land, crowding in private capital, enabling universities to anchor demand & creating safe, affordable student housing at scale. The state must move from builder to enabler. Delighted to have co-authored this piece with Atharv Gupta(pictured below) in @FinancialXpress. financialexpress.com/opinion…

In the last 2 weeks, one man in India quietly did what AI labs spend billions chasing. And nobody noticed. Jitesh Prasad, a physics grad from the University of North Bengal and MBA from IIM Lucknow, runs a one man lab called Udgam. Between Oct 10 and 23, he shipped 5 open AI models and a public benchmark. There is Laghu, a chat model trained from scratch for $146. The full cost ledger is public, failures included: 8 rented GPUs, 13.2 hours, all in < $200. There is Shruti, a Hindi-English-Hinglish speech to text model in a single 29.5 MB file. It runs offline inside a browser tab. On the same Hindi test clips it makes fewer errors than OpenAI's Whisper large-v3, a file a 100x its size. On English, he tells you plainly, Whisper wins. There is Gargi, a 384M reasoning model named after the Vedic philosopher Gargi Vachaknavi. Trained on 17B tokens, about a 1,000x less data than Alibaba's Qwen2.5-0.5B, and within 2 points of it on reasoning tests. On knowledge tests, his own model card admits, it loses badly. Everything is Apache-2.0 on Hugging Face: weights, code, checkpoints, evaluations, even the $0.45 spent discovering a failed run. No funding round. No press release. Just one man, thirteen days, and the belief that honest numbers matter more than big ones. Sources: udgamlabs/blog (link in the comments); Hugging Face model cards udgamlabs/Shruti, udgamlabs/Gargi, udgamlabs/Laghu Photo 1: Shruti model card WER table - 29.5 MB Shruti beating Whisper large-v3 (3,087 MB) on all three Hindi sets, with Whisper's English wins visible. Photo 2: Laghu's public cost ledger - $146.26 for the main run, ~$194 all-in, even the $0.03 X search row. Photo 3: Gargi vs Qwen2.5-0.5B - 384M on ~0.017T tokens vs 494M on ~18T, within 2 points on reasoning, honest MMLU gap in the same rows. Photo 4: The Hugging Face org page - "Team members 1" next to the full model lineup. The one-man lab in a single screenshot.

The China state-aligned threat actor Storm-0940 used the agentic AI penetration testing framework ARTEX to automate attacks targeting hundreds of organizations globally across a broad range of industries. Microsoft Threat Intelligence assesses that Storm-0940 was responsible for the recently disclosed ConnectWise supply chain compromise of a multitenant application. msft.it/6018aakEE Our investigation found that Storm-0940's use of ARTEX accelerated the speed of compromised application abuse to authenticate to target environments through applications that had already been granted access, allowing the threat actor to operate without requiring an interactive user sign-in. AI-accelerated follow-on activity included reconnaissance, application credential changes, and attempts to modify privileges that could enable expanded or persistent access. Read our blog for a detailed analysis and indicators of compromise (IOCs), along with Microsoft Defender detections, protection recommendations, and guidance on investigating service principal sign-ins and unexpected application credential or privilege changes.

Worth taking note of!
The latest iPhone runs a 20-billion-parameter AI model (MoE), right on the device. Macs also run AI models locally now. Microsoft is bringing a 137-billion-parameter model to powerful PCs, plus an environment for AI agents to run locally. Qualcomm is building chips that can run strong AI models directly on devices. Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei and others are all heading in the same direction. If the trend is not clear, AI is moving to the edge. This makes sense because the edge is where the context is. Our phone (and computer) knows a lot about us and is a hub of context. It has info about our contacts, communication, location, activity, documents, preferences and more. Small models with rich context perform better than large models with poor context. This means the majority of AI usage will be local and on-device with rich context. What about large models? They of course have a place, but scoped differently. Model training will likely stay in the cloud along with complex reasoning. Large models will also be distilled into smaller versions that run locally (again, rich context). Its like engineering, we spend years learning calculus, complex algorithms and advanced maths, but how often do we actually use all that complexity? Most problems don’t need it. AI usage could be similar. We are building incredibly powerful models, but most everyday tasks will be handled by much smaller, local models with the right context, with the cloud there when we need deeper intelligence. We’re spending hundreds of billions to centralize AI compute and intelligence, while power is already a big constraint. Meanwhile, billions of distributed devices are gaining compute and are getting ready to run smaller models, decentralizing intelligence. It’s like electricity. We will need grids, but local solar can handle a good chunk of the load, with the grid as backup. I think we might be overestimating the need for centralized AI compute and underestimating the power of context-rich AI at the edge.

Thanks for acknowledgement @Nithin0dha but let me tell you something, there are many such examples, be it Uber or Zomato or Gpay or WhatsApp or Blinkit or yours wouldn't be possible to exist without Airtel or Jio. That's power of Telecom infrastructure. It just doesn't connect people to each other but people to world!
When Jio was getting ready to launch in 2015, I remember being petrified to find myself on this Economic Times list of 10 businessmen to watch in 2016. Mukesh Ambani was #1, and I was #6, mainly because we had just made delivery brokerage free. We were, and still are, ants compared to Reliance/Jio. 😅 Looking back, what's phenomenal isn't just how big it has become. It's how much it has changed India and helped so many businesses start and grow. We've been beneficiaries too. @Zerodha wouldn't be what it is today without Aadhaar and UPI. But just as important was Jio, along with Airtel, bringing millions of Indians online with affordable data. Together, all of this made the huge expansion of Indian capital markets after COVID possible. Without this digital infrastructure, many online-first businesses would be much smaller, and a lot of today's consumer business models might not exist at all. In 2016, India had roughly 2 crore unique investors. Today, over 13 crore Indians invest in the markets, and Jio played a big part in that. I can't tell you whether to apply for the upcoming IPO. But both telcos have played a huge role in enabling an entire generation of Indian businesses like ours. And it's nice that the capital markets they helped grow can now help Jio raise money. From the outside, it's easy to miss how much of our success depends on infrastructure built by others.

I'm trying to digest this fact for past few min! Unbelievable!
ELON MUSK: SpaceX took the team that dominates space and “applied that same team to the deployment of terrestrial compute.” “This is a bit like the New York Yankees playing in little league. It’s not fair.” SpaceX puts almost 90% of all mass into orbit. China is roughly 6%. The rest of the world combined, including the rest of the U.S., is about 4%. That’s “an order of magnitude greater” than all its space competitors combined. Now that team is deploying power, cooling, and infrastructure “vastly faster than anyone else, and may at some point be faster than everyone else combined.” “Let that sink in for a minute.”
