Walter Kirn: Everything that happens before the election is a PSYOP.
KIRN: “Everything that happens, the polling, the rumors, the word of mouth, the social media posts, the trends, the little anecdotes that get repeated and go viral. Everything is subordinate to that election. And none of it is true in and of itself. It's all instrumental.”
“Not only don't I trust the polls, I do trust the polls. I trust them to be nudging people in all the ways that polls can for all the people who can pay for polls.”
“The news now is all about behavior modification. It's not about truth.”
For the next week, every poll or viral story you see, don't ask if it's true. Ask what it's trying to get you to do.

My wife watched Grey’s Anatomy for a bit and here are some REAL plot lines:
-A man has extra arms growing out of his back he calls “Angel Wings” and it’s implied he can hover with them
-A dead dad possesses his son to perform surgery on his sister. The son’s not a surgeon he’s a janitor who just broke into the OR
-A man fell 40,000 ft from a plane and came in with ONE BROKEN LEG
-A man gets crushed in a trash compactor so they do surgery at the dump using trash as tools. They hum the Fat Albert theme during
-The hospital’s swamped because “a guy dressed as a clown blew up a hospital downtown” implying they’re in Gotham City and the Joker is real
-A burglar uses explosives to blow open a safe, the door then imbeds in his chest and they need a locksmith to open it so they can perform surgery
-Jared from Subway is a recurring character
-The main doctor has a migraine so bad she can freeze time. It’s not played metaphorically, she’s physically moving things

I need you guys to understand that it is the worst confirmation bias and cult like mentality to attach your personality to a brand, decide that everything is going to be good even without seeing it and then go and accuse people of being biased because they didn't like it. Even though you are the biased one. It is another level of stupid that I can't stoop to I'm sorry. Muting and blocking from here on out.

The idea that poverty is man-made rather than the default starting point is one the dumbest and most dangerous misconceptions in economics, politics and life.

Everyone imagines communism will free them to write poetry while someone else enthusiastically maintains the sewage system. Your economic model is “what if everyone else had fewer dreams than me.”

We really have to start treating socialists like economic flat earthers. They operate at the same level of sophistication, can't understand basic concepts provable w/evidence etc. I don't understand why they're part of the adult discourse (no one at NASA thinks space is fake)

In the opening chapter of Blood Meridian, Judge Holden interrupts a preacher's sermon, accuses him of horrific sexual crimes and incites a mob against him. Later, in a saloon, he admits he'd never seen or heard of the man before. The entire room bursts into laughter.

This is also what our education system is designed to produce: a difficulty or even inability to form longterm plans. This is why hand writing has been reduced in the curriculum, why even students at elite universities struggle to read a novel, and curiously many teenagers are unable to read an analog clock.
Their time horizon has been compressed. If one can’t sustain attention long enough to make it through a novel, how can they possibly think about the long term in their own lives?
Additionally, handwriting is known to develop the prefrontal cortex in the brain, the part of the brain responsible for impulse control, patience, and measuring consequences of actions.
They are, in every way, seeking to produce automatons guided by impulse that can be shaped and moved easily by media theatrics.

One thing missing here that I think is helpful to understand the rationalist mindset: On some level, like philosophy undergrads, they enjoy reaching repugnant conclusions.
What do unintuitive, uncomfortable conclusions provide proof of? That the reasoner is "strictly" rational, so rational and committed to rationality that they can overcome their lesser drives.
It is a flex!
Secular utilitarianism, if accepted absolutely, quickly leads to repugnant conclusions. EAs and rationalists are uniquely isolated from contradicting ideologies and frameworks that might slow their minds and hands.
They are also uniquely likely to take things to logical conclusions, and to suppress intuitive pangs of the conscience disagreeing as "irrational". (They tend to hold very binary understanding of emotions and reason, which are, of course, not actually mutually exclusive.)
My problem is with the fundamentals first, and then after, with the observation that adherents to this particular worldview are more likely to become fundamentalists.

In our experience, most good writers truly don’t care about politics. They care about writing, and the people they write about. Political talk, when it surfaces in their work at all, is simply a way to illustrate character or provoke the reader. The greater the overt role of politics, the less interesting the work. You can take it to the bank.

Correct—the reason that contemporary literary fiction sucks is that we’ve forgotten that literature is supposed to be for the general public rather than exclusively for MFA professors and their they/them friends with gender studies degrees.
