This research gets at something missing from most debates about AI’s economic impact: coordination. Organizations are more than the sum of their best performers, so smarter individual agents won’t transform the economy on their own. Agents that can coordinate together might do.
I joined @GoogleDeepMind to develop a research program on the economics of AGI. Today, together with Andrew Koh (@andrewjkoh) and Shane Legg (@ShaneLegg), we are incredibly excited to release The Economics of Intelligence, the first in a series of projects from our group on how AGI will change the economy. How do capability improvements transform the economy, and when? In this project, we define thresholds of economic capabilities, e.g., minimal AGI, based on how they transform the economy. We then track how the economy–market structure, employment, and wages–changes during the transition across capability regimes. We have seen exponential increases in what AI agents can do but the broader economy seems almost remarkably unchanged. Part of the reason is that the solo AI agent is the wrong economic object; economic transformation is an equilibrium outcome where organizations compete. Looking at how intelligence functions within organizations, transformation will depend on when two key capability thresholds are crossed: competence (gains on individual skills, e.g., coding, math) and coordination (gains on ability of agents to cooperate and work together). We show that what economic transformation looks like depends on whether AI becomes supercompetent, supercooperative, or both—the regime of artificial superintelligence (ASI). Tracking this transition shows why the real visible transformation may come from improvements in coordination—a capability most benchmarks don’t yet track. Past a certain threshold, AI capabilities can break the Coasian ceiling on firm size and lead to an economy that looks drastically different than the one we see today. Two main takeaways: 1. To understand the path of transformation, we should be tracking agentic coordination more closely. 2. The impact of AI will likely show up in wages before market structure or employment. We are really excited about this paper. Excited to hear people’s thoughts. Link: institute.deepmind.com/essay…

AirBNB had its place and time, but it’s over. Had a lovely stay at a Hyatt last night, left trash in the can, towels on the ground, and am confident my corporate overlord isn’t going to light me up with a guest review video. A professional exchange of goods for money. The AirBNB hosts did this to themselves and the platform lost control long ago.

The big disconnect on Airbnb cleaning requirements stems from a bunch of ‘hosts’ who got sold a passive income real estate owner dream & found out hospitality is the reality. Asking a guest [paid or unpaid] to take the trash out and strip the linens off the beds is terribly gauche.

Airbnb owners are my favorite breed of “entrepreneurs” because they’re running service businesses but think they’re real estate moguls who discovered an infinite money glitch. Your customer base is shitting on you saying Airbnb host demands are insufferable. But instead of listening to the market they will just complain to daddy Airbnb about the mean guests (their paying customers) Marriott hotels for me 7 days a week and twice on Sundays.

Tell them to hire a cleaning service like every other home owner does. Your guests are not your employees. Y’all tried to destroy the hospitality industry not realizing you gotta do the hospitality part to compete with them. Now you got a second mortgage and no guests. 😭
🚨 #BREAKING: Airbnb hosts threaten to sue the company after it banned mandatory dishwashing, deep cleaning, and home improvement services be performed by guests.

Everyone who says "why don't the AI companies work on things that are actually good for humanity?" - well, this is the sort of thing we *were* working on before ChatGPT came out and everyone dropped everything to compete with that instead.
Google Deepmind (FNV3) CRUSHED the forecast for #Isaias up to 11 days in advance. It picked up some appreciable signal on September 23, locked in on the exact landfall location4 days before it happened, and nailed the peak intensity consistently 3 days before it happened. A new age of forecasting is upon us. First video: Track density using 1000 member ensemble Second Video: Individual tracks and mean using 50 member ensemble

No. They were designed so we don’t have another Portsmouth, another Blackburn, another Leeds, another Bury etc which is why the PREMIER LEAGUE (as in the MAJORITY of clubs) voted it in Football didn’t start in 2009. The “Red Cartel” had success long before that and it wasn’t based on hyperinflation Besides since the rules came in, Liverpool, Arsenal and United combined have won a measly 5 PLs Quit this farce
The financial rules of the Premier League are designed to give Man Utd Liverpool and Arsenal success in perpetuity despite on field failure. Despite that the owners of City signed up to the rules when buying the club and today is a damning moment no doubt.

Man City’s Disguised Funding Scheme: Sponsorship Fees: Season - Total (Actually Paid) 2009/10 - £27.0m (£4.5m) 2010/11 - £41.25m (£12.75m) 2011/12 - £86.75m (£16.0m) 2012/13 - £121.75m (£16.0m) 2013/14 - £127.5m (£16.0m) 2014/15 - £123.2m (£16.0m) 2015/16 - £136.17 (£16.0m) 2016/17 - £140.59 (£11.0m) 2017/18 - £145.73m (£11.0m) Total - £949.94m (£119.25m) So sponsors were only liable for the £119.25m total figure, with the £830.69m additional shareholder funding disguised as ‘commercial partner revenue’.

What we used to mockingly call "GPT wrappers", are now respectable "domain-specific harnesses".
I was just at YC demo day yesterday. Besides hardware/physical things, everyone is just basically just building a domain-specific harness
