🚨 India wants VETO POWER or NO SECOND-CLASS PERMANENT SEATS!🤯
=> “Equal rights for all permanent members,” declares India at the UN.
PM Modi skipping UNGA year after year makes the message even LOUDER:
India wants power at the high table, not lectures from an institution stuck in 1945🤣🔥

Delivered India's statement at the UNGA Plenary on the use of the Veto
Highlighted:
➡️ Veto is a responsibility, not a tool of narrow political expediency. We note that two of the P5 have not exercised veto for over three and a half decades. Most vetoes or threats of vetoes have emanated from three of the P5.
➡️ Piecemeal reforms will not work. All five clusters of UNSC reform must be addressed together.
➡️ Veto initiative of 2022 was seen as a harbinger of change. However, actual record of large number of vetoes cast since UNGA 76/262 tells a contrary story.
➡️ Unwritten consensus rules enable de facto vetoes in Council decisions and sanctions committees.
➡️ Consensus cannot become a disguised veto in the Inter Governmental Negotiations (IGN).
➡️ India aligns with the Common African Position: As long as the veto exists, all permanent members must enjoy equal rights.
➡️ New long-term seats without veto powers would create second-class members and perpetuate inequity. All permanent members, including new ones, must enjoy equal rights.
➡️ Begin text-based negotiations with clear timelines. The UNSC must reflect today's realities, not those of 1945.

India’s Ganges Water-Sharing Treaty with Bangladesh is set to expire soon on December 12, while the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan has been placed “in abeyance” indefinitely. Both these treaties confer rights without establishing corresponding responsibilities for downstream Pakistan and Bangladesh. Yet rights should come with duties, including obligations to uphold peace and security.
In this essay, I suggest how India can embed new water-sharing arrangements with Pakistan and Bangladesh in separate peace frameworks by emulating the Israel-Jordan model. If Pakistan and Bangladesh want India to do what China refuses — agree to long-term sharing of river waters with any downstream state — they must at least accept verifiable commitments to peace under new water-for-peace arrangements.
Water should become a peace dividend, not an unconditional entitlement. It must become a key incentive that sustains subcontinental peace itself. openthemagazine.com/india/wa…

Told the same long back to friends - Cong walked into a well laid trap w.r.t delimitation and women’s reservation bill
In @the_hindu today
‘The Congress assumes success in preventing a BJP amendment wrt delimitation..It must know that it has no viable path to keeping both the current strength and the shares of individual States intact. The only two options are: first, the number of Lok Sabha seats increases, but the individual share of States remains unchanged through a constitutional amendment, as the BJP says but has not written in a draft legislation. Second, the number of seats does not increase, but the existing seats get reallocated on the basis of the latest Census, leading to a massive slash in the representation of Keralam, Tamil Nadu and other States in similar positions both as absolute numbers and proportion. The BJP will blame the Congress and the Left, if the second option plays out, while reaping the advantage of the additional share in the heartland. The BJP has two good options from its vantage point; the Congress has two bad options to choose from, from its vantage point.’
