In writing this I discovered this funny fact that this steel mill consumed 50% as much water in 2024 as all combined US data centers did onsite in the same year.
Turned this tweet into a rant about the complexity of large industry and how the data center debate often smooths that over blog.andymasley.com/p/other-…

Co-opting the American love of conspiracy theory by making these very obvious nakedly corrupt trades sound like Ossoff uncovered a giant conspiracy
Ossoff: When he first announced the tariffs, you remember that? He called it Liberation Day, and it crashed the markets because it was clown policy. You remember that? OK, so follow me through on this. He announces the tariffs on April 2 of last year. The markets tank nonstop for like a week because it’s a disastrous trade policy, and six days into the crash, April 8, Trump buys millions in stock. I’m talking Amazon, Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Berkshire Hathaway, and then the very next morning, April 9, he posts on Truth Social, quote, “This is a great time to buy.” Three exclamation marks. OK, now listen to this. Three hours and 41 minutes after that post, one day after he bought millions in stock, he canceled the tariffs and triggered one of the biggest same-day rebound rallies in market history. He’s trying to get money. And you saw, now he’s offering paid subscriptions to presidential announcements, right? Just understand what’s for sale here: The sitting president’s pronouncements on war and peace and economic policy delivered first to paying customers. What an absolute crook.

What was that study that showed that conservative men are subservient to other men in authority?? Anyway…
Trump, who does not drink because his older brother died of a drinking problem, takes a sip and toasts President Xi Jinping in a sign of respect

non-zero chance that Trump’s election ended up being a net positive for liberal democracy worldwide because the Right started losing everywhere in the world after he was elected

Accepting Liz Cheney's unconditional endorsement (with zero concessions): Bad. Disqualifying Embracing the nazi racist lady because she agrees with you on one issue: Gotta do it. You'd be foolish not to take this tremendous opportunity.

Holy fucking shit?!?!
The Trump administration is warehousing pregnant child rape victims in a Texas facility, away from adequate medical care, in a state with one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the US, so that these child rape victims won’t be able to get abortions. throughline.news/p/the-trump…

The funny thing about right-wingers being obsessed with this quote is that it easily applies to their treatment of liberal democracy and its institutions during the past decade.

New Theory: It was the Europeans that messed up. After the fall of the Soviet Union, instead of sticking with NATO, the EU should have reached out to a vulnerable Russia and made it a tame little brother. We all know deep down Russia craves European approval. And the economic synergy between Russian raw resources and European manufacturing would have been unstoppable. EU+1 would easily lap the US as the world's top superpower. And they would have been better stewards of the multilateral international order than the Americans, who truly let the unipolar moment go to their heads and started going to seed.

Everybody is wrong about birth rates - a chunk of the left is way too reluctant to admit that this is a real problem, and a chunk of the right is wrongly convinced you can fix it with more sexism, which will actually make it much, much worse.

I don't think you should trust jobs reports for the next 3.5 years. This is the kind of thing that happens in a dictatorship. This is an erosion of democracy.
