Are plant roots really made up of concentric layers of homogeneous, differentiating cell types? In our new study, out now in @Nature, we show a more complex picture: two distinct cell states within root lineages, shaped in part by the environment. 🧵👇 nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

This work led by @jennbrophy7 and her student @vivzhong97 in collaboration with my lab & student Michaela Jones published online this morning at Nature Biotechnology nature.com/articles/s41587-0… Helps limit engr'd microbial functions to target plants Exciting science, amazing collab
We engineer both plants and bacteria to establish non-standard amino acids as a new molecular language for programming plant-microbe interactions. This work contributes to the growing toolkit for precision agriculture and we hope it accelerates the path to a sustainable future!

New research. Conveniently, Marchantia has relatively few transcription factors. Yet, we need to leverage on that at the family scale to have a more comprehensive picture. In this paper, we focused on ERFs, the second largest TF family. #PlantScience biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel – awarded the 2026 medicine prize – discovered a remarkable protein, channelrhodopsin, in a single-celled alga. Hegemann wondered how Chlamydomonas, a single-celled alga, is able to swim towards a light source. In the early 2000s, he and Georg Nagel discovered channelrhodopsin, an algal protein with unique properties, found on the surface of the cell. When it is illuminated by blue light, a channel opens through the protein. Charged ions then flow into the cell, creating an electrical impulse. They found that regardless of which cell they put the protein in, those cells became light sensitive. #NobelPrize

‼️A new story from our lab!🙌 We show that SNI1, a component of the SMC5/6 complex, acts as a temperature-dependent brake on class II crossovers, helping shape where genetic exchange occurs in Arabidopsis. Huge effort by Alex made it happen🙏
1/2 My very first post on X—and what better occasion than the publication of our paper in @NaturePlants! 🌱 We identify SNI1 as the first plant gene linking temperature to meiotic recombination, generating genetic diversity that may help plants adapt. nature.com/articles/s41477-0…

Two decades after revealing the mechanism of action of auxin, we have now uncovered the molecular mystery of another plant hormone: salicylic acid (SA), the precursor of aspirin that most of us have taken at some point in our lives. We were surprised again rdcu.be/EbdVwEStSHha

Out today in Nature: sex without crossovers. Rhynchospora tenuis makes pollen, fertilises and sets seed, yet 0 crossovers in 10,997 pollen nuclei. Chromosome drive and ~87% seed abortion rebuild the mother's genotype, so the offspring are clones. doi.org/10.1038/s41586-026-1…
A new extreme of meiotic evolution: ✔️ no crossovers ✔️ no gene conversion ✔️ normal meiosis & fertility Sex mimics clonality without becoming asexual, in the holocentric multicellular eukaryote 𝘙𝘩𝘺𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢 𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘪𝘴. more about it: biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

Great work by Busche et al. (2026) on how #PlantTOR can reduce #plasmodesmata (PD) transport by promoting the expression of PD-localized callose binding proteins (PDCBs), which drive #callose deposition at PD through the PP2A-ABI5-PDCB1/2 signaling axis. 🔗science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…
