Most US tech and game publishers pay their CEOs via stock compensation, not cash, which only grows if they reach the stock price.
In Japan, CEOs are not typically paid this way. Furthermore, most Japanese public gaming companies still have a large chunk of ownership by their founding family, who are the people that gain billions of dollars in value.
I never see people complain that the founding family of Nintendo or Capcom are billionaires or earn hundreds of thousaands times more than their employees who are paid avg salaries 1/3 that of American workers.

So what's the salary of big publishers CEOs in the US? 🤩 For example Strauss Zelnick vs Furukawa. And how much is the budget and investment in AAA or GaaS compared to Nintendo games.
Blame the employees salary to justify massive layoffs is definitely a choice.

A Charlie Brown Christmas has been commercialized from here and back for decades now. That irony was built in from the start - no one at CBS thought it would be a hit and the only reason it aired is because Coca-Cola had commissioned it and already paid for its production.

People not understanding this about Peanuts is a pet peeve of mine. I think people assume it's cute and cheerful like Family Circus or something. But the whole strip is a heart-breaker.
- Charlie Brown is a relentless failure and never vindicated for all his striving
- Linus's faith is never rewarded
- Lucy's love is unrequited and she becomes worse for it
- Peppermint Patty's love for Charlie Brown is never returned
and on and on
Snoopy escapes from this through his imagination. He's totally in his own world and lives by his own rules. The cruelty of life can't get to him.

In Fahrenheit 451, the chief book-burner, Captain Beatty, describes how reading became obsolete because the public demanded increasingly fast-paced entertainments, and those entertainments slowly corroded their ability to think. “Books cut shorter. Condensations. Digests, tabloids. Everything boils down to the gag, the snap ending. Classics cut to fit fifteen-minute radio shows, then cut again to fill a two-minute book column … Many were those whose sole knowledge of Hamlet was a one-page digest in a book that claimed, ‘Now at last you can read all the classics.’ … School is shortened, discipline relaxed, philosophies, histories, languages dropped, English and spelling gradually neglected, finally almost completely ignored. Life is immediate, the job counts, pleasure lies all about after work. Why learn anything save pressing buttons, pulling switches?”
In this passage Ray Bradbury foretells the intellectual hollowing out of the working class, the advent of AI-generated “summaries” of classic novels, the attention-frying culture of short-form video, the relaxation of educational standards into non-existence. All of this in a book published in 1953.

There really was a golden period of web writing (pre socials) when you would get up every day and check Salon, Slate, Gawker, Jezebel, Pitchfork, Hipster runoff… maybe even Perez to remind you what never to be. RIP
This is so sad. I’m 54 years old and started reading Salon when I was in college. It was early proof that you could do great journalism on the web and (along with suck.com) made me think maybe I could make a living writing on the internet

i wanna share my thoughts on making it as a cosplayer. tbh i used to be delusional enough to think i could be skilled enough to opt out of the male gaze but you really can’t unless you’re extremely skilled at cranking out engaging content

Nobody is saying the 90’s anime isn’t flawed. But it’s a much better product than Crystal.
Also it should be common knowledge by now that the 90’s anime wasn’t an adaptation. It was a mixed media product. Crystal is an adaptation.

I do think one extremely overlooked banal evil in America is parents who are clearly desperate to live vicariously through their children.

Now youth sports is deadly serious. Families have paid thousands to be there and feel like their child's future is riding on it.

I love that people are reading the NYTimes' piece on NewJeans, but it's stunning how little people know about journalism. NYT employs some of the best journalists in the world. Why wouldn't they report the story? It has global interest, and made headlines around the globe.

Re: Vouchers for School Choice. People keep saying the money should follow the child, but that's not actually what's happening in Texas.
The state didn't put money into an individual account for every child and then let parents take it wherever they choose. Public school funding is calculated through a state funding formula based partly on enrollment and attendance.
Texas created a separate $1 billion taxpayer-funded voucher program to help pay for private schools and homeschooling.
Many of the children receiving vouchers were already attending private school or being homeschooled. They weren't leaving public schools. Taxpayers are now helping pay expenses those families were already choosing to take on.
Meanwhile, taxpayers are still paying to support public schools, and those schools still have to maintain buildings, pay teachers, provide transportation and educate the children who remain.
This is not the same money following a child. It's an additional public expense that taxpayers are helping fund alongside the public school system.

For young men to become the best versions of themselves, they need to have good things around them to give them a reason to work hard.
“B-b-but you need to work hard first then get good things later!” is lazy gaslighting from bad faith actors who want to keep young men down.
