I moved to MN in September of 2008 and within a month I’d been told of the Halloween Blizzard of 1991. It will never not be brought up by those that lived through it. πŸŽƒπŸŒ¨οΈβ„οΈβ˜ƒοΈ
The Halloween Blizzard of 1991 is the storm that gave Minnesota its favorite bragging rights. It arrived just days after the Twins won the World Series, as if the state had not been given enough joy for one week. The forecast called for flurries, and what showed up was three days of snow that people still describe in the same voice they use for family legends. It began like a trick. On Thursday, October 31, freezing rain and wet flakes rolled in around trick or treat time, and kids headed out in costumes anyway. Plenty of them wore snowmobile suits over their capes and cardboard masks. Some trick or treaters reportedly showed up at doors on snowmobiles. By midnight, the Twin Cities airport had measured about eight inches, more than any October on record at that point, and the sky was just getting started. The next day buried everything. Another 18.5 inches fell on November 1, and the Twin Cities finished with 28.4 inches, the largest single storm in its history, a record that still stands. Farther north, Duluth got 36.9 inches, with 24.1 of them in a single day, and the winds blew the snow sideways for what felt like forever. Snowblowers sold out in a flash. A neighbor who owned a working one became the most popular person on the block, and a bag of jelly beans might have bought a driveway. The storm had a way of bringing people together. Cars disappeared under drifts, schools closed, and roads turned into white tunnels. The snow was wet and heavy, strong enough to damage a number of roofs, so folks climbed up with shovels to clear them before the weight became a problem. Strangers pushed stuck cars, shared extension cords, and handed out coffee. When the clouds finally broke, the temperature dropped to three below zero on November 4, the earliest subzero reading the Twin Cities had ever recorded. Then came the candy. Parents everywhere discovered that a bowl of Halloween treats makes a spectacular emergency supply. Kids ate fun size Snickers for breakfast, built snow forts that stayed all winter, and returned to school with stories that grew taller than the drifts. A pumpkin sat on a porch with a snow hat for days, glowing faintly under a white blanket. That is why Minnesotans still say the date out loud with a little twinkle. They remember the frozen costumes, the shoveling, the neighbors, and the quiet after the storm, when every street was soft and silent. If anyone from out of state asks whether it ever really snows in October, the answer is simple. In 1991, we had a Halloween you could not walk out of. Source: MN Field Guide | FB

At a recent event where I spoke at a community center, a group of β€œpro-Palestine” militiamen appeared outside to protest and disrupt the event, along with agitated older white women who entered the venue to do the same on the inside. The organizers and I had arranged extensive security because these same β€œactivists” had spent days trying to get the event canceled and openly vowed to do whatever they could to stop it from happening. As I walked in, a few masked β€œactivists” in keffiyehs whispered, "is this the genocide guy?" I turned to them and said, "hi gentlemen, thanks for coming." One replied, "Free Palestine." I responded, "I agree, including from Hamas." Once I began speaking, several disruptors engaged in a steady stream of whispering, side conversations, eye-rolling, posturing, and juvenile antics. I stopped and asked one of the women why she and her comrades were behaving like children. She admitted she knew nothing about me or my work but felt qualified to declare that if I were truly Palestinian, my Nakba-surviving grandparents would be rolling in their graves. I asked the agitators to be respectful, explaining that while security could remove them, I would rather they listen to what I actually had to say, instead of relying on misinformation spread about me by the local DSA, BDS, and other "pro-Palestine" groups. What enraged me most was their reaction when I spoke about my family in Gaza, the relatives we have lost to Israeli airstrikes during the post-October 7 war, and the destruction of both my childhood homes. These white β€œactivists” laughed and smirked as I described some of the most painful experiences of my life and the sense of personal loss that inspires my work. They showed shocking indifference toward the very Palestinians on whose behalf they claim to be acting. I confronted some of the disruptors directly and asked why they get to define what it means to be "pro-Palestine," despite knowing nothing about me and showing no interest in the trauma my family has endured. Some stormed out shouting "Free Palestine." Others fell silent. One person, despite strongly disagreeing with me, acknowledged that my views were rooted in personal loss and genuine concern for my people and shook my hand before leaving. On my way out, a pseudo-journalist known for glorifying Hamas and "the resistance" tried to ambush me with questions about whether I was paid by weapons manufacturers, oil companies, or, as he brilliantly misstated it, the "Arab Union Emirates." It struck me how absurd it is that I needed three heavily armed security officers and a bodyguard simply to speak about healing and reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis, the dangers of extremism for both societies, the catastrophic damage Hamas has inflicted on the Palestinian national project, and the right of Palestinians to freedom, safety, and prosperity alongside a secure Israel.
