He was an IIT engineer whose medical condition dramatically changed his appearance. Then Bollywood turned him into one of its most terrifying horror villains. His story gets even more unbelievable. While shooting a horror film, he was accidentally locked inside a coffin. The space left for him to breathe had been sealed, and nobody could hear his screams. He later said, “I could have died.” His name was Anirudh Agarwal. He graduated in civil engineering from IIT Roorkee in 1974 and moved to Mumbai, where he initially worked as an engineer while pursuing his interest in acting. Then he developed a condition caused by a tumour in his pituitary gland. The resulting hormonal changes dramatically altered his facial features and body. He later recalled that people who once found him handsome had started looking at him with fear. Even strangers would get frightened when they saw him. But an unexpected opportunity was waiting. A well-wisher suggested that he meet the Ramsay Brothers. When Anirudh walked into their office, they were stunned by his appearance. They had already shot much of Purana Mandir (1984), but were still searching for the right actor to play the demon Samri. They immediately signed him. His appearance was so suited to the role that he needed very little transformation to become the terrifying character. The film became a major success. He later appeared as Samri again in Saamri and played the vampire Nevla in Bandh Darwaza (1990). He also showed a different side of his acting as Babu Gujjar in Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen (1994).
