artsci.tamu.edu/comm-journal… -- new faculty bio up -- still researching/teaching media law and media law history -- i.e. Why the First Amendment Matters and why everything has an origin story, *even* that thing you read about on @WIRED (though the folks there would likely agree)

Pretty sure this 1982 Penguin edition was the inspiration for the new film’s aesthetic. 🧡

RIP Army Col. William DeGraf, age 100, veteran of 3 wars with more combat decorations than you can count. Blocked from promotion to general because he refused to inflate body counts in Vietnam. Great obit by @dugganwapo Gift link: wapo.st/4jDnnz1

GEnie (the General Electric Network for Information Exchange) was founded in 1985 as a dial-up online service that connected users through email, forums, games, and downloads, building a devoted community while competing with CompuServe and AOL. 💿🌐 In 1996, new owners attempted to reinvent the magic 🧞 for the web era. But the service struggled to keep pace & went up in smoke by Y2K. With the onslaught of AI absent a modicum of regulation, affecting basic reading comprehension and analytical skills compared with even ten years ago, cutting off a year of undergraduate education is a horrific idea. We have an obligation to protect our students, not exploit them

This week marks 1 year since returning from maternity leave. It's been the hardest year of my professional life. But I'm proud of everything we made it through. So just a shoutout to the moms in journalism. New moms, old moms, all moms -- you're crushing it and I'm proud of you.

Today we remember astronaut Ronald E. McNair, born OTD in 1950 in Lake City, South Carolina. McNair, a physicist, jazz saxophonist, and karate black belt, was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate in 1978 and flew his first shuttle mission in 1984. He tragically perished in the Challenger accident on Jan. 28. 1986, yet his legacy of excellence, curiosity, and perseverance lives on.

Glad to be part of this letter and the fight for copyright enforcement around the world.
Today a group of 63 international media organizations led by the News/Media Alliance delivered a letter to senior Australian politicians asking them to reject proposed changes to the country’s copyright laws that would allow artificial intelligence companies to use copyrighted material in training their models. Collectively, the signatories represent thousands of copyright owners, creative sector organizations, and publishers across the world, and contribute to a growing domestic and international consensus, including comments from the Vatican, condemning the proposed changes. They echo claims from Australia’s creative community that this would upend the country’s copyright regime by forcing rights holders to effectively forfeit their rights unless they opt-out. This undermines decades of international precedent, devalues their works and investments, and threatens their ability to negotiate for fair compensation for access to and use of their works. Earlier this year, Sarah Chihaya was diagnosed with MSA—a terminal neurodegenerative disease. Right now, she can no longer read or write—this will be her last piece. And it's a brilliant one about Emily Brontë and unknowability. thenation.com/article/cultur…
