Trump’s deal-making instinct assumes everyone has a price. But the Houthi conflict isn’t transactional. It’s religious. You can’t negotiate with eschatology. Saudi doesn’t have a choice here. When cruise missiles are hitting your airports and killing your airline captain, you punch back hard. That’s not strategy. That’s survival. Today’s BDE Live: why Washington keeps misreading the Middle East, and what it means for oil. 🎥 Full show 👇teapawt.org/collide_ai/status/2110… #Saudi #Trump #Oil @wmarkmeyer @collide_ai @FracSlap @nimblephatty
Saudi Arabia is under fire as Houthi strikes on the Riyadh and Abha airports push the war into civil aviation, and several oil CEOs skip the WPC Energy Congress next door. Aramco's Amin Nasser warns from London that global inventories are scarily thin and could take two years to refill once Hormuz reopens. Then Trump's Russian diesel deal, the Treasury license behind it, and whether Russia can deliver, plus why behind-the-meter gas for data centers keeps growing. teapawt.org/i/broadcasts/1dKrPrBWM…

One line stuck with me: "just because you've been doing it wrong for 40 years doesn't make it right." We've gotten very good at frac'ing faster. We haven't gotten much better at getting oil out of the ground. Drill times have dropped from 30 days to under a week. We run simul-fracs, zipper-fracs, and quick-connect manifolds, and we frac 50+ stages. Even so, most horizontal wells still recover only 5–10% of oil in place. On our latest collide. Community Call, John Kalfayan sat down with John Ely and Jon Harper from Ely and Associates Corp - Global Hydraulic Fracturing Expertise to talk about the next big gain: recovery engineering, meaning better completion design rather than faster operations. Between them they have decades of frac experience, from Halliburton field engineering to designing jobs in vertical wells, crosslinked gels, and today's shale plays. app.collide.io/content/b9px5…

Hit me up for tickets to the YDC Roast of Scott Sheffield on Nov 12th….a don’t miss event
In his forthcoming memoir ("From Tehran to the Permian"), US shale tycoon Scott Sheffield compares (via his wife) Exxon CEO Darren Woods with Satan. Sheffield sold the company he founded, Pioneer Natural Resources, to Exxon in 2023 in a deal worth $60 billion.

I drove to the Alamodome to watch My Chemical Romance play The Black Parade. Last week the AI labs ran a funeral march. Coxon quit. Hubinger put extinction over 10%. Dario said keep building. Then the jumbotron posted the only rule that actually matters. Same dread. Same assignment. You carry on. collide.io/old-man-coffee/fa…

Chuck's on stage at the Ion on September 3 with Charles Jessup from Raytheon, one guy who built an AI platform now running in 122 countries and one who rolled AI out to roughly 100,000 employees. Two very different scars, same night. Houston AI Club, Allenix, the Ion District, and Collide put it together, and there's 45 minutes of open networking after. Free, but the room only holds so many.

Saturday morning experiment: piped all 445 episodes of my two podcasts through the Transistor API. Six years of me talking. Every word, every guest, every take. Then I asked an AI one question: find a pattern in me that I don’t know about.

New Old Man Coffee is up. I built an AI version of Ken Hersh on our own software. It was polite and boring — until we told it to take the gloves off. Then it roasted me, my deck, and my career. Accurately. What that taught us about where judgment actually lives 👇 (link in comments)

Full fanboy confession buried in my new Old Man Coffee: “I hope Marc Andreessen reads this someday. And if he does, I’m pretty sure he’d say I’m underselling that point. He’d be right.” No time like the present. @pmarca, tell me what I’m underselling. Link below.

New special edition of BDE with Arjun Murti on the current crisis, refining’s relevance, and energy macro and policy. Worth a listen, and it’s the kind of thing you’ll find on Collide.

Wild Cards, Second Acts, and a 71-Year-Old Guy Who Still Can’t Sing Last weekend, 57-year-old Chuck did something because 13-year-old Chuck would’ve wanted it that way. I flew to Detroit, ate an absurdly good Detroit-style pizza right off Eight Mile Road, then drove to Battle Creek to watch David Lee Roth at a casino. The man is 71. The voice is shot, he’s making up the lyrics as he goes, and he was objectively terrible. But damn… it was glorious in all its wonder. I loved every minute of it. I brought our head of data security, Sam Texas, with me. The deal was that when we weren’t eating pizza or watching Diamond Dave embarrass himself, he had to teach me how to code. So we built a ridiculous blackjack game — my face is on every card, the dealer talks shit like Dennis Miller, and we threw in wild cards just to watch what happens. I’ve now officially told Collin I’m part of the engineering department. But not everything has been fun and games. Here’s the part I don’t usually say out loud. We’ve done some legitimately insane things to keep Collide alive — like throwing a 400-person crawfish boil in my own front yard just to scrape together enough money for payroll. Equally crazy, every share I own, I paid for myself. That’s what it took to get us here. Thankfully, those days are behind us. Today we’re a software company backed by Mercury Fund, which means we’re raising capital every twelve months — typical for a startup at our stage. But it’s sure as hell better than selling crawfish boils. Right now I’m not taking a salary. Over the last six years, I’ve drawn basically nothing so we can allocate capital where it matters most. I don’t need the money — I’ve already had that part of my life. What I need now is a second act. Not just to prove to myself — but if I’m being honest, to everyone else too — that the initial one wasn’t an accident. That first time around I was the weird hoodie guy in private equity. I never took myself seriously, but I took what I did very seriously. What hurt most was that a handful of people I thought supported me — people I genuinely respected — would smile to my face and then talk shit about me behind my back. There were definitely days I believed the criticism — days I genuinely wondered if I should just conform. Hell, I did own an Armani suit and a couple of Hermès ties — and I could have bought more. But even with all that self-doubt, something in me still believed that just being me might actually be enough. Now I’m trying to do it again — this time building something from scratch, learning to code at 57, and betting the whole thing on building AI to completely revolutionize how the energy industry works. Watching a 71-year-old David Lee Roth still out there giving everything he’s got — even with an empty tank — hit me harder than I expected. Because some days this journey feels exactly like that. I don’t know how this story ends. But for the first time in a long time, I’m more optimistic than I’ve ever been. And by the way… that 71-year-old man with no voice still commanded the stage, brought the house down, had the crowd eating out of his hand, and walked off to a standing ovation. I think 57-year-old Chuck was every bit as delighted as 13-year-old Chuck would’ve been. Sip slowly, my friends. @DavidLeeRoth @heysamtexas

Chuck's new blog lays out a Customer Bill of Rights: your data stays yours and exportable, a direct line to a real person, no AI fairy dust. Eight commitments, one ask in return, you've got to be a real design partner. collide.io/old-man-coffee/i-… collide.io/old-man-coffee/i-…
