I recently finished listening to the entirety of @ehanford's #SoldAStory and feel a lot of gratitude to be beginning my teaching career at the same time as this work is in the world. Truly some of the most consequential reporting of our time. 🧵

NYT: “There is this urgency around the story, this unbelievable grief,” said @ehanford, a journalist at APM. Her podcast #SoldaStory detailed how stars of the literacy world & their publisher diverged from scientific research. It racked up ~5M downloads. nytimes.com/2023/04/16/us/sc…

Axios: Heather Honey, most known for denying the results of the 2020 election in Pennsylvania and Arizona, is now the Homeland Security Department's deputy assistant secretary for election integrity and senior advisor to the ICE Director.
Axios: MAGA activists are pushing for President Trump to resort to extraordinary measures — including martial law — if they believe the midterm elections are "rigged." Ticktin, Trump's childhood friend, said on the call "there would have to be martial law in the event... [of] another rigged election." axios.com/2026/10/16/trumps-…

Across the world, right-wing and even occasionally liberal governments are using the immigration system as a way to punish and silence individuals whose speech those in power disagree with. In the US, @IlhanMN is one of the most prominent examples yet: jacobin.com/2026/10/trump-va…

In this week’s Frankly I unfurl a metaphorical “ladder” that traces the systems-oriented forces shaping the economic Superorganism: Seven rungs that trickle down to affect the behaviors and events we witness in our daily lives, as well as reinforce humanity’s dependence on energy and material growth. There has been a Wilful Optimism amongst Scientists and policy makers. Only a small number of people have dared to call it as it is. And now we have Trump charging the world over the precipice. I’ve been on the right side of this Debate but that doesn’t help my grandchildren.
New paper by the World’s most prominent climate scientists shows rapid acceleration of human-caused warming, with a warming rate now that tracks to near 2.4°C by 2050, far faster than was expected, if it continues. From paper: “We are witnessing the rapid destabilization of the Earth’s climate system. This is no longer a warning for the future; it is a diagnosis of the present. Earth’s life-support systems are being pushed beyond stable limits, with changes unfolding faster than our ability to respond. Human activities are driving profound shifts in the atmosphere, oceans, and biosphere.” Paper Link in replies… H/T @LeonSimons8 …

Seconded. The film is tremendous.
I’ve seen NAZA. It is not about Gaza or even about IDF rules of engagement. It is 100% a film about Israeli society. It is about how the most liberal, educated and enlightened socioeconomic elites among us could carry out such mass killing, some even while being well aware of it.

Trump: we are running low on ammo not because of my war on Iran but because Biden gave “massive amounts” of Tomahawks to Ukraine. The U.S. didn’t supply a single Tomahawk to Ukraine.

Let me get this right - in the last week we’ve seen cars washed away in Chile, Istanbul, Turkey and now São Paulo, Brazil. And no media is joining the dots @bbcnews @itvnews @skynews @thetimes @bbc5live @lbc @DailyMail This isn’t even the new normal. It’s going to get much much worse. #climatecrisis #climatebreakdown

Data centers are less popular that prisons.
Blue Rose Research's @davidshor on why AI data centers have become a major issue in the midterms, with just 12% of voters wanting one nearby compared to 13% for a prison: "If you ask voters, 'Do you want a data center built in your neighborhood?' 12% of voters say yes. If you ask whether they want a prison, 13% say yes. Those numbers were in the 40s 8 months ago." "Data centers have become just a radioactively unpopular thing, and both political parties are running tons of ads about that." "I personally think that AI is gonna be the dominant issue about a year from now when these primaries are really kicking off."

This a cinema in Göktürk, Turkey after the extreme rain. Ironic considering that Hollywood has barely engaged with the climate Crisis, in the weeks after one of the biggest films to ever do so, Digger, was savaged by critics.

Climate Change Is Increasing Simultaneous Exposure to Heat Waves and Wildfire Smoke when each is dangerous alone. More than 1 billion people per year were exposed to heat waves and fire pollution at the same time from 2010-19, a sharp jump. @Katie_Surma insideclimatenews.org/news/1…
