idk, maybe it's because i lived through the livejournal/ffnet/wattpad/tumblr/etc censorship purges, but people downloading their favorites fics for personal archival and sharing them when the originals are inaccessible has always been a huge part of keeping fandom culture alive

I find it quite ironic how many AO3 authors I'm seeing who are mad about people downloading their work without their permission (from a site that explicitly allows it) while the entire point of said work is using someone else's characters, ideas, and IP without permission.

UN MES SIN AO3
We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner. Refer to our status page for updates: otwstatus.org/
makes ME crazy cause it’s like you’re also using someone else’s characters and stories ?!??? why is it okay for you to use them but not okay for people to download fics you posted on an archive site with a big download button💀

i keep seeing people referring to fic drives as work being shared without “reward” for the author and i have to be honest, it bothers me that people are posting on ao3 with their main motivation being recognition and reward. wanting comments and engagement is natural, but i think framing it as reward or a return for your work is kind of indicative that you don’t really understand why fanfiction exists to begin with.
fanfiction exists as a way for authors to express themselves, explore characters and identities and try things out. it’s a creative outlet and you should be writing because you want to do it. not because you want the attention it brings. we lose the culture and motivation behind fandom practices when we commodify them.
u guys need to get the word woke out of ur vocabulary this is ridiculous and so far removed from its actual definition

ao3 was made by freaks for freaks a nie dla przewrażliwionych pizd ktore robia z siebie policjantów broniących moralności fikcyjnych postaciXDDDDD

cases like this illustrate the importance of emphasizing again and again that ao3 is not a content platform, its an archive. it exists to house fanworks w/out fear of deletion, & offers a way of navigating the archive like the dewey decimal system helps you navigate a library

im seeing a bunch of tweets like "it's weird that people have such huge archives of fics that arent theirs downloaded to share..." or "i hate that i'm seeing a copy of my fic being passed around outside of my control" and i think y'all need to touch some grass
Posting fiction to a free archive website with a very visible download feature then getting annoyed by people using said download feature because it means you miss out on “engagement” is weird behavior
Nobody is robbing you of money here so making it some morally wrong thing as if it’s equivalent to pirating is ridiculous
Surely those 50 extra kudos don’t mean that much to y’all

im sorry for being so annoying about ao3 criticism but man it is one of the last remaining websites with ZERO !!! ads online 😭 you dont need an app, you dont need a subscription its entirely free and its !!! ad-less !!!

“Site engagement” isn’t an actual thing that matters on a website with no algorithm 😭😭 U should be writing fic with the sole purpose of creating smth you and other people enjoy, and it doesn’t matter whether they enjoy it as a pdf or a website

am I being too harsh or "without the author gaining any site engagment" is absolutely stupid? ao3 is an archive, not a social media or a fic site. you shouldnt care about "gaining" anything.
