MELBOURNE Participants sought for a 4 wk feeding study looking at a diet therapy for active #UC. All meals supplied for 1 month!!! @MonashNutrition
@hmstaudacher
@Matt_Snelson
Also recruiting #dietitians who may be interested in undertaking this project as a #PhD.
Animal vs plant #protein, is one always bad and the other good for reducing risk of #IBD or to alter disease outcomes?
Read our newly published review on this topical question onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
#notallproteinsarethesame
In IBD, “plant vs animal protein” may be the wrong question.
Protein source, accompanying fibre and the overall dietary pattern may matter more than the label itself.
Our new open-access review explores the evidence and clinical implications:

The adaptations that occur in the large bowel in patients with a pouch may inform the design of #diet therapies
@dakotarrj, Peter Gibson, @EmmaHalmos, @Jonathansegal85, @ZaidArdalan & @yao_ck update changes in the ileal pouch following surgery and the potential role of dietary interventions for improving patient outcomes:
✅ The ileal pouch undergoes a series of changes following surgery at the level of immune cells, epithelial barrier, and microbiota
✅ Strategies prior to colectomy should be considered to prevent pouchitis downstream
✅ There are 2 main targets: pouch function as a reservoir and the pouch microenvironment
✅ Potential ways to prevent or treat pouchitis include:
🔸Changing bile acid composition
🔸Modulating the pouch microbiota
🔸Altering intraluminal concentrations of short-chain fatty acids
🔸Reducing products of microbial protein fermentation

Proud to see this work published finally, well done @dakotarrj on shifting through the literature to understand the extent of colonic adaptations that occur with a pouch & how they may inform design of #diet therapies
academic.oup.com/ibdjournal/…
Thanks to the combined wisdom of @dakotarrj @ZaidArdalan @Jonathansegal85 @EmmaHalmos & Peter Gibson. We uncovered:
1. #Pouch epithelial cells may not be efficient in utilising #butyrate as fuel
2. Strategies that work on making the pouch more colonic may not work
3. Prophylactic strategies (e.g. prior to colectomy) should be considered to prevent #pouchitis downstream

See how the sham diet was designed for comparison to the 4-SURE diet. This is high-quality design of dietary trials jandonline.org/action/showPd… @Alice_APD @yao_ck @RobVBryant
Proud supervisory moment for @dakotarrj for getting the D-#ECCO2026 travel award @ZaidArdalan @Jon_Segal
#ECCO2026 was also important to see results of the #4-SURE diet RCT. an 8-week whole food #4-SURE and sham diet both achieved clinical response, segmental endoscopic response & disease regression. Congrats @Alice_APD and team

#ECCO2026 Interesting cellular & molecular study showing that steroids reduce but not normalise plasma IL-6-JAK-STAT3 & other inflammatory pathways. ?Consideration of early UPA + steroid in ASUC

And we're off! First Asian Diet and IBS consensus guidelines committee meeting in action @KewinSiah @jrbiesiekierski @MonashFODMAP
Congrats to @jrbiesiekierski for leading this review in @TheLancet summarising the literature to date that true gluten sensitivity is uncommon in #ibs
📢New paper in @TheLancet suggests that fermentable carbohydrates and nocebo effects contribute considerably to symptom generation in cases of non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), rather than gluten. This aligns NCGS with other disorders of gut-brain interaction like IBS 🧠 💩
