Rick's own words. On March 12, 2023, Richard Allen gave his wife Kathy an instruction from inside his solitary cell at Westville Correctional Facility: "I worry that they're going to take me and drug me or torture me and try to get a false confession out of me," he told Kathy. "If they ever try to say that I confessed, you need to ask to see the video and the audio." Three weeks later, sleepless and disoriented, Rick would tell Kathy he had killed two girls; and the State would build its entire case around those very words. He had been married to Kathy since 1991, had no criminal record and no history of violence. He did, however, carry a long psychiatric history: major depression and generalized anxiety since childhood, and a 2019 hospitalization for suicidal thinking.
