The downfall of @Artizen is a wake-up call. Public goods can't stay a feel-good community of practice cut off from first principles. We need formal verification and evaluation of our funding and community mechanisms.
Allocation mechanisms deserve the same rigor as critical software: assume bugs, assume exploits, and test for both. That takes mechanism design and math, not just pilots and showmanship.
That's why we started AI4PG: research on mechanism design for public-goods funding, impact evaluation - check out some of the great work of our grantees ai4pg.com

The Cardano Foundation's new Agentic Coding course caught our attention!

Learning by building, testing real transactions, and earning credentials.
That's a philosophy we share at Gimbalabs.
What opportunities could we create together for new Cardano developers?

The media should stop asking politicians whether they BELIEVE in climate change and start asking them whether they UNDERSTAND it.
It’s science, not Santa.

Google did this to build a data center in Finland.
It was illegal, but they did it anyway.
Big Tech is out of control.

The opposite of Network State Nostalgia:
* Rebecca Grace Rachamy on the enshittification of network state (school) society
gracerebeccarachmany836224.s…?
"Have you noticed that Balaji’s speech has moved from that of one of the most insightful commentators on the state of technology to the speech of a politically-motivated real estate agent? It’s a function of the fact that the Network School locations are, in fact, real estate arbitrage projects, touted as “Society as a Service”. The “society” you get is a fully vanilla society. The residents barely get to decide their own decor. Everything comes blandly furnished. The co-working space, the cafe, the gym—nothing was created by the residents.
Oh, and did anyone mention that even the long-term residents were routinely shuffled from room to room when the Network School was overbooked, or someone “more important” came in? If you were at NS for a longer period of time, you found out that you didn’t have the right to any particular room or apartment. You could be relocated to another room any time the team decided they needed to do so.
Anything that was created by the residents ended up being deemed an “L2”, which is a kind of business that was a layer on top of the foundational NS layer. The NS cafe, the kombucha sellers, the bicycle rental, the maker space, the yoga studio: each of these was a mini-business which residents were launching as businesses that could potentially fund their long-term residency.
Some of these businesses ended up being taken over by Network School. I’m not sure how exactly this functioned, but it seemed that over time, the more successful ventures melded into NS. So maybe your dream of having a long-term business might not have been founded on the best contractual arrangement.
There are good reasons why the arrangement at NS is still a good deal. $1500 per month for all-inclusive accommodations, meals, gym, fast internet, cleaning, the whole works—that’s not bad. Several startups put their HQ in NS, because they could bring together multi-national teams for a year or two, with no distractions, at a fairly low price, with no operational overhead.
The problem comes when you feel zero responsibility to the residents of your project."
What does privacy for all actually look like?
At @token2049, I highlighted four initiatives from the @MidnightNtwrk roadmap:
▪️ Nightmode: Midnight's privacy, extended to assets that live on other chains
▪️ Collateral Warehouse: private, global vault for asset management
▪️ Offer Files: private, atomic settlement between any two parties on Midnight
▪️ Midnight Passport: private identity and authorization for people, agents and organizations
Each solves a different piece of the puzzle. Together, they help bring Midnight’s broader vision for cross-chain privacy and onchain finance to life.

Last week two different chatbot companies were in the news. First, Character. ai filed for bankruptcy, in an effort to avoid accountability. New reporting suggests Disney asked the company to file for bankruptcy as part of their deal to acquire the technology. They didn’t want to buy the company outright because of the legal liability. Kids were harmed. That debt does not disappear in bankruptcy court.
Then eight state AGs filed coordinated lawsuits against OpenAI this week. First coordinated state action against an AI company. The allegations: deceiving parents about safety, designing products that create emotional dependency in children, and failing to protect young users from self-harm content. Nebraska’s suit is the one to watch. It’s the first enforcement action brought under a state design code law. That’s a milestone worth marking.
While CharacterAI seeks to use the bankruptcy process as a get out of jail free card, OpenAI’s defense? Parental controls. We’ve heard that before. You cannot parental-control your way out of dangerous design. The burden of proof belongs on these companies.
These stories show the AI chatbot industry is running the same playbook social media ran. Race to scale. Worry about safety later. We know how that story ends.

"I don't trust questionnaires," @jnd1er tells @meedabyte on Boundaryless Conversations #147, because even a designer who lives among people for months and befriends them remains "a foreigner."
His answer, in Design for a Better World (2023), puts people living with a problem inside the design.

MAATTR explains, and this is key to P2P Theory:
"Replication, not scale.
substack.com/@naturalcapital…
Scale makes one thing bigger.
What the world needs is thousands of per cent, which no enlargement delivers.
Only replication of a proven unit does, and only if the unit is small enough to be reproduced by people who are not the founders."

"One of the biggest issues with AI... is that these platforms and models are collecting exponentially more data than social media was able to. Therefore, they can more cheaply, more quickly and more easily target people." Tech whistle-blowers Brittany Kaiser and Frances Haugen tell me why we should be very worried about AI and our data: "It is very easy for our foreign adversaries to spread disinformation at an exponential rate more than ever before."

My mind is blown by how far ahead Apple is with local LLMs. The new Mac Studio M5 Ultra will have a 512 GB model for around 15-20k. You can chain 6 of them together using thunderbolt 5 and this have over 3 TB of ram and a massive amount of CPU and GPU cores. This means you can run a frontier model with over 2 trillion parameters locally for around 100kish. Nivida is around 500k for the same capability.
