Three years later, we did it! Change has finally come 🙏🏾 Married women can now retain their father’s name on their passports — and all passports will now list mother’s name as well. @yasmin_bokhari @mehrbl
Passport office has refused to give me a new passport unless I put my husband’s name on my ID card. @NadraPak what’s the point of giving women the option to have their father’s name on their CNIC after marriage if the passport office isn’t going to comply? Ridiculous policies.

If a parliamentary committee is formed to investigate the PIMS incident, its hearings should be live-streamed to ensure transparency.

Every morning, I pour water from a jug I bought from a Gul Plaza vendor who did not survive January's deadly fire. Months later, even I struggle with that thought. I cannot imagine what his family lives with. That fire brought calls for building safety, fire preparedness and accountability. Months later, here we are again. More than a dozen newborn babies are dead in another fire. At this point we just move on from one tragedy to the next.

Excellent suggestion of direct elections for all executive offices in local government - Pakistani cities deserve their own Zohran Mamdanis!
In the year 2000, Pakistan’s per capita GDP, at purchasing power parity, was $2880, higher than India’s at $2010 and Bangladesh at $1620. We were 43% richer than an average Indian and 77% richer than an average Bangladeshi. Today we are at $6480, Bangladesh at $9180 and India at $12,560. So an Indian is 94% is richer than us and an average Bangladeshi is 42% richer than us. This is the most important story of our national governance system over the last 26 years. In the last 4 years we have taken debt of Rs 40,000 billion. In the first 75 years we took debt of Rs 45,000 bn. Our tax revenues have doubled over the last four years and yet people today are poorer than in 2014/15 and 2018/19. 29% Pakistanis are poor (with monthly resources of less than Rs 8485). We eat less of all commodities, including atta and rice, meaning Pakistanis are going hungry. Of course we spend over Rs 400 crore to run the PM house and the President house. Over this period we have seen Gen Musharraf, President Zardari, Mian Nawaz Sharif, Imran Khan and Mian Shehbaz Sharif at the helm, along with a few caretakers. We have seen military, civilian and hybrid governments. What we have not seen is progress. None. Education: 39% or over 2 crore 60 lakh kids are out of school. And a majority of kids in school cannot read, write or do arithmetic at their class level. Our education system is failing our kids and we are just spectators at this dismal state of affairs. Is there anyway a nation can develop without its kids being educated? Also Sindh govt just released billions in media ads. Health: 7500 kids have been infected in Pakistan with HIV (that causes AIDS). Mostly due to used needles and unscreened blood. Pakistan has the second highest neonatal mortality rate in the world, worse than South Sudan, Eritrea and Chad. 40% of our children are stunted. 42% of our women have iron deficiency. 1 in 5 people in the world with Hepatitis is a Pakistani. Also Punjab govt recently bought a Rs 1100 crore plane and 4 Mercedes cars for over Rs 100 crore. Our provinces are under civilian control since 2008. The NFC making them flush with cash came in 2009. The 18th amendment giving them new authorities came in 2010. But there isn’t a Provincial Finance Award in a single province. No political party (PTI, PPP or Noon) has established empowered local government. They won’t let go of power and cash. Our system of governance has failed and failed completely. Awaam Pakistan party has been saying it from the day the party started. Where do we go from here. Empowered, federally financed and constitutionally protected LGs. Failing which smaller provinces. But now. We cannot afford to wait forever. Direct elections to all executive offices in local governments and provinces. Essential for breaking the hold of fossilised political parties. Reform of NFC. School vouchers for all poor kids. Forming of school boards with hiring and firing powers all in govt schools composing of parents and officials. Badly run govt hospitals to be transferred to trusts and govt to keep funding at current levels. Ending of lifetime employment for bureaucrats. You work, you stay. Or go home. No ghost workers or teachers. Reduce the size of government. Move to economically efficient way of pricing power and gas so they become cheaper. But parties that are part of the problem and beneficiaries of the system will not want to change. So they need to be removed from the govt. They weren’t fairly elected anyway. National reconciliation. Continuous and major reforms. Otherwise our relative decline will continue. Hunger and illiteracy will become more widespread.

A very good piece by @Ishrat_Husain In the long run, our competitiveness depends on productivity. With an HDI of 0.544 and 40% of children under five stunted, we cannot compete globally. A sustained investment in health, quality education, and birth spacing is essential to build a productive and competitive nation. Rethinking trade policy dawn.com/news/2017189

A baby in her arms. A purpose in her voice. Shehar Bano attended the inaugural District Youth Assembly session in Multan as a member from District Jhang, and she brought her one-month-old baby girl with her. For many young women, this was one of the first opportunities to enter a formal space to speak about governance, climate change, and issues that shape their lives. The District Youth Assembly is a space where young women from South Punjab get equal opportunity to learn about governance, to participate in climate action, and to lead change in their communities. Replying to @Pildat
@Pildat provided a platform and opportunity to empower & engage the youth of a highly marginalized & climate-vulnerable district. Muzaffargarh. The session of the "District Youth Assembly" was productive and educational, focusing on governance, local govt, and climate change.

Pakistan’s youth are full of promise! I was inspired by each and every one of the nearly 200 delegates I interacted with over the last two weeks. More power to all of you ❤️ @EUPakistan
200 young leaders from Jhang, Kot Addu, Layyah and Muzaffargarh came together to learn, debate and lead. Through the District Youth Assemblies, participants explored climate action, democratic governance and youth participation in shaping their communities. My views during meeting with the PM last evening: 1) I appreciated the macroeconomic stabilisation achieved over the last two years, largely supported by documented businesses and the salaried class through higher taxation. It is now time to reduce their burden & provide them relief. 2) Meaningful relief is only possible by bringing the undocumented economy into the tax net. With cash in circulation exceeding Rs 11 trillion and estimated tax evasion of Rs 4–5 trillion annually, digital monitoring and simplified tax laws could enable recovery of at least Rs 1–1.5 trillion. 3) High taxes and petroleum levies have heavily burdened ordinary citizens. Govt has to show political will and focus must now shift from taxing the documented sector to documenting the untaxed sector 4) I also proposed sending a small official team to Bangladesh and Vietnam to study and replicate their export promotion policies. 5) The upcoming budget will determine where capital flows. Investment naturally follows sectors where returns exceed the cost of capital. The government must decide whether it wants capital directed towards exports and industry or towards real estate and speculative activities. @GovtofPakistan @CMShehbaz @MIshaqDar50 @Financegovpk @betterpakistan @BilalAKayani @AliPervaiz450 @akleghari @mincompk @jam_kamal @sifcpakistan @81ShahbazRana @AliKhizar @shazbkhanzdaGEO @ShahzadIqbalGEO

Important questions raised by @MiftahIsmail - if public funds are being used to launch an airline, what is the status of its registration and management? And what is the rationale behind the procurement of an 18-seater jet?
