They think a great deal of their position; don't let one of them ever persuade you he doesn't, for if you were to proceed on that basis you'd be pulled up very short." a character in Henry James' The Portrait of A Lady, describing the "radicalism" of the upper classes.

I've spent the last 2 years on a reworking of Kafka's The Castle about an average American from the countryside who is desperately trying to get inside the walls of the near mythical Cheesecake Factory and they just.... tweeted it out.

Cheesecake Factory populism is so weird to me because the rise of chain restaurants created over-the-top, replicable dining experiences, which eventually put the final squeeze on mom-and-pop restaurants, such as the US version of trattorias. I would argue those family-owned neighborhood businesses made the dining experience feel more special and pulled communities together. The shift to chain restaurants homogenized American life and concentrated corporate power. Strange to frame corporate consolidation as "populism."

For a very similar reason, I never became an actor.
my husband was today years old when I told him that every horse they use in movies is female because giant horse penis flopping around would be insanely distracting to the audience

American conservatives are constantly bemoaning the decline of aesthetic standards and calling for a return to classical Roman architecture, but are now forced to defend the Cheesecake Factory. A constant tension between the Brooks Brothers patrician and the Kid Rock populist.

cue 2,421 of retweets asserting that fanfiction *is* uniquely exempt from general analysis/critique bc writers are “just doing this for fun 🥺” followed by another week of writers wondering why the fic they put bare minimum effort in isn’t getting kudos, comments, or bookmarks
this mass psychosis that fanfic is an uncritiquable art form is a symptom of the literacy crisis don’t ask me how i just feel it

devastated. i’m a blue collar parent in a swing state who was going to surprise my daughter with dinner at the cheesecake factory, the fanciest restaurant of all time. but now my daughter says cheesecake factory is “mid,” because of obama, and she is changing her name to mark.

Out of touch liberal elites don’t understand that for the average American the Cheesecake Factory is the nicest place they can imagine. For these people, sweatpants are like tuxedos. They think of Tweety Bird as a kind of God. Don’t you dare condescend to them.

“Male gaze” critiques are intensely annoying because they focus so much energy on whether some man somewhere is jerking off to this (the answer is “yes always”) and never on any other questions of how the film portrays women.

It doesn’t matter if a critic thinks a film is good or bad. The important part is how they arrive at their conclusion.
Roger Ebert's zero stars review of The Devils rogerebert.com/reviews/the-d… Roger also gave zero stars to: Texas Chainsaw I Spit On Your Grave The Hitcher Police Academy Death Wish 2 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me he gave 1 star to Blue Velvet & The Thing & half a star to Hellraiser

American political commentators are not serious people.
This line is getting praise on X, but it’s actually elitist garbage written by a speechwriter who clearly hasn’t spent much time in a Cheesecake Factory, which has none of the gaudy Trump aesthetic, and just feels good to say because it represents flyover MAGA “night out.”

The subtext is also that a male can permanently disempower and dominate a female by raping her because the female's "sin" of being a rape victim is far worse than the actual sin of rape.
The subtext of the Vivek ad - if you are abused as a kid, we will make sure it haunts you for the rest of your life and disqualifies you from a life of public service - is so bleak. There are already too many reasons good people don't run for office, and this will make it worse.
