An Appeal survey of state prison systems reveals that prisoners in many of the hottest states live in units without air-conditioning. Only five states provide air conditioning in all prison housing units.

After years of advocacy, the Assembly has the votes to pass a major bill to protect families from harassment via ACS/CPS — but they’re about to go home without voting on it. They have no excuse to avoid passing this.

The scary "book on terrorism" NYPD is using as evidence of criminal intent is an Oxford Press textbook from International Affairs U6387, a course taught this semester at Columbia by Michael E. O’Hanlon, director of research in foreign policy at the Brookings Institution
Pencils, books, laptops, those are the tools of students and what you expect to find on a college campus. But here’s what the NYPD found in Hamilton Hall at Columbia University after we were able to arrest the protestors and agitators for commandeering and barricading themselves inside the building. Gas masks, ear plugs, helmets, goggles, tape, hammers, knives, ropes, and a book on TERRORISM. These are not the tools of students protesting, these are the tools of agitators, of people who were working on something nefarious. Thankfully, your NYPD was able to prevent whatever they were planning and stop them before they could do it. Continue to peacefully and lawfully protest; but know that if you engage in illegal conduct, the NYPD will hold you responsible and hold you accountable—someone has to. @nypdpc @NYPD1stDep @nypd @nypdchiefpatrol @nypdchiefofdept

I am genuinely shocked anyone would tolerate this behavior by a public servant. @NYCMayor is this ethical? Is this professional? Does this reflect the kind of service you expect from your administration? What kind of institutional culture does this reflect and tone does it set?

The continued mismatch between @Columbia’s actions and the alleged harms remains baffling to the point of bad faith. And the tragedies the president laments below seem the predictable outcomes of her actions. I’m a proud alum, but I do not have faith in this administration.

Even more intense than Columbia by all accounts. This is citywide repression.
Friends, please, please amplify. The NYPD are now raiding City College. Reports are hundreds of cops. Please, I know that what happened at Columbia tonight is sickening--but this is Part II. And our @cuny students are largely working class students of color.

Barnard College has now suspended and evicted over 1% of its total student body for nonviolent protest. These institutions are eating themselves alive, destroying their own legitimacy by targeting their best and brightest. Shame on you @preslrosenbury.

The 6 justices in the majority in Pulsifer can't claim w/a straight face that they're textualists. They are, instead, ardently pro-govt in criminal cases no matter the statutory language. The Gorsuch dissent (joined by Jackson and Sotomayor) is pure 🔥. supremecourt.gov/opinions/23…

This lawsuit is indeed groundbreaking--and overdue. All parents should have their rights respected--not just affluent white ones.

Why are the major news outlets ignoring Abbott's rebellion? There's nothing or next to nothing by NYT, AP, WaPo, CNN.com. I found one article in the Guardian: theguardian.com/us-news/2024…
