It is a mystery why only the UK side of the North Sea is a declining basin while the Norwegians keep finding more and more oil and gas on their side of the North Sea. 🤔 Could this possibly be caused by our ban on new exploration?
Backing new licenses won’t save jobs in a declining, mature basin, but it will put a wrecking ball through climate credibility. Employment in Scotland supported by the oil and gas sector fell by a third since 2014 - despite hundreds of new licenses being awarded.

An Observer editorial repeated the claim that Brexit cost 8% of UK GDP, put at £224Bn or about £4.3Bn a week. The report called such claims demonstrably wrong, citing official ONS & Eurostat data. (15/10/26) x.10101.uk/c.php?u=https%3A%…

EU re set will cost UK taxpayers more money, put up energy costs, burden businesses with needless extra rules, slash UK university income from EU students, give away fish we could land and invite in many more young people needing homes and jobs. Why do any of that?

If this is true, then the UK would lose an industry worth £28 billion, to slightly lower the import costs of UK supermarkets, including the privately owned German ones that operate in the UK. 🤔 The UK's entire food and animal exports to the EU were only worth £12 billion in 2025. Why are we throwing good money after bad? 🙄
What is now being briefed on the UK-EU SPS agreement is that the UK didn't achieve any carve outs on gene editing. The EU merely agreed the UK could transition towards the EU's more restrictive approach to gene editing which is due to be implemented in July 2028.

Is this a joke? The EU wants the UK to put tariffs on Chinese EVs and Steel in the Reset agreement using WTO GATT rules, but it also wants the UK to dynamically align with its's SPS rules which are against the WTO's CODEX rules. Talk about cherry-picking! catherinemcbride.substack.co…
No cherry-picking. No special treatment. The door is open. This time, it’s meant for coming in, not walking out. There is so much to do together to face global challenges🇪🇺🇬🇧 #Brexit

EU reset: joking apart, what ‘smoky-bacon-crisps-gate’ shows is that EU rules will override ours. We will have no say in them & any disputes will be decided by EU courts.
After the news smoky bacon crisps could fall foul of EU rules, environment secretary Angela Eagle tells @StigAbell to “get a life” when asked if she would be willing to sacrifice the flavour. “This is actually about ensuring that we can do business with our closest neighbours.”

Here are the figures for the UK's participation in the Erasmus Scheme when we were members. Labour has agreed to pay the EU £810 million a year for this scheme, which covers short-term trips to the EU of 2 days to a year. If the same number of students use the scheme, that works out to £42,100 per trip. Enough to pay for a 4-year university course in the UK. #StoptheReset

Handy chart to illustrate the relative importance of UK exports of food to the EU, which is the centre-piece of the 'reset'... 🤔👇 (In 2025, the UK's exports of food to the EU were worth £12.2bn, about 1.3% of all exports and just 0.4% of GDP)

We don't have to join the EU's Internal Electricity Market (IEM) to trade electricity with the EU; we already do. Last year, 10% of UK electricity came from the EU. But interconnector capacity and grid constraints prevented us from buying any more. Joining their IEM is estimated to reduce the wholesale cost of the 10% of electricity that the UK imports from the EU by between 0.25% and 0.7%. This could save private electricity companies between £120 and £370 million a year. But the EU requires the UK to contribute to the cost of running the EU system. Based on the payments of Norway, Switzerland and Northern Ireland, Britain could have to pay between £40 and £80 million a year towards the IEM operations. The UK would also have to align dynamically with the EU's environmental protection, including its RED III target of 42.5% of gross final energy consumption to be from renewable sources by 2030. The UK's current proportion is only 16.8%. Our electricity is 53.5% renewable, but our heating is only 10%, and our transport is only 6%. (DUKES Table 6.5a) But tied to this is a mandatory commitment to pay into the EU's Cohesion Fund in perpetuity. Unlike the IEM agreement, this one has no get-out clause. Britons should expect to be forced to pay £3 to £4 billion.

No they didn't 'stop coming.' There were 63,600 EU students studying in UK universities in 2024/5 and they were paying the full fees, just like all other international students, as well as the NHS surcharge. Lord Bilimoria wants to give them a discount, worth on average £15,000 each but with your money - not his. This will cost UK tax payers almost a billion pounds each year even though these students can afford to pay the full fees.
A young European who wants to take a full degree here now pays international fees, often three or four times what a British student pays. Unsurprisingly, many have stopped coming. I support the Government's willingness to offer EU students discounted fees at the summit on 20 November, on two conditions: the cost must be met by the Treasury, not by our universities and colleges, and British students should be treated fairly in return. European students who study here go home as lifelong friends of Britain. We should want them back.

If you are a sane, rational person who can perform simple maths and cares about the economy of their country and the future of the people within it, then you should be livid with the government this morning. There is no part of the proposed EU reset terms, that you should be remotely happy about. The entire deal is giving the EU what it wants, and dressing it up as a benefit for the UK when it is anything but. - Promising to not deport EU criminals - Paying billions a year to build infrastructure in Eastern Europe - Subsidizing EU students to study in the UK, costing hundreds of millions a year - Putting UK laws in the control of the EU again, with no say at all from Parliament - Adding hundreds of millions of costs onto imports from non-EU countries - Making imported EV cars 30% more expensive, to help EU car manufacturers - Giving 80-100,000 extra youth visas a year, increasing competition and driving down wages for our unemployed youth - Stopping checks on imported agrifoods, increasing risk of diseases currently rampant in EU livestock entering the UK All of this with the reason of making exporting food to the EU easier, which we do virtually none of and never did, as we are an island that consumes more than it produces. It doesn't matter if you ultimately want to rejoin the EU or not. This isn't about that. This is about an atrocious deal and our atrocious government. Fight this with everything you've got.

Even small local bakeries that never trade with the EU will have to follow EU rules on ingredients, packaging, and nutritional information. Industry compliance costs are estimated at £2 to £3 billion. They will also face additional compliance costs every time the EU changes its rules. UK taxpayers will also have to pay the EU for its policy work to create and enforce these rules on UK firms. This could be up to £3 billion a year, every year.

Labour's EU rejoiners, led by PM Andy Burnham, want to convince us all that Brexit is responsible for the UK's poor economic performance. It is a lie. Living standards have stagnated since the 2008 GFC, way before Brexit. The Establishment hope that if you repeat this lie often enough, it will convince the electorate that rejoining the EU is a good idea. And I have to say, so far their strategy is working.
Replying to @PJTheEconomist
This puts into perspective. You can see average income growth over a 60 year period. This decade by the far the worst. Even worse than in 2010s which, at the time, were the worst in post war history.
